Guyana lost eight wickets for nine runs, and the Falcons chased 77 in 5.2 overs

Guyana Amazon Warriors were 40 for 2 at Kensington Oval on Thursday night and looked like a team setting something up. Nineteen balls later they were 49 for 9. The Antigua and Barbuda Falcons bowled them out for 76, knocked the runs off in 5.2 overs and went straight into Sunday’s CPL final, and the whole thing was over before most of India woke up.

Eight wickets for nine runs

Shadab Khan and Sufyan Moqim took four wickets each, Shadab for 16 runs and Moqim for 13. Between them they removed eight batters in 3.1 overs while Guyana added nine runs, which is the kind of collapse that usually needs a green pitch and a new ball rather than two spinners in the middle overs.

Shadab’s hat-trick came in the ninth over, and he needed the last three deliveries of it. Shimron Hetmyer went at 8.4, Mehidy Hasan Miraz at 8.5, Quentin Sampson at 8.6. That over broke the innings in a way the scorecard barely captures, because nothing in the first eight overs suggested the game was about to end.

A last-wicket stand of 27 dragged Guyana to 76 in 15 overs, and even that number flattered them. It was never going to be enough on a ground where Rahkeem Cornwall was waiting to bat.

Sixteen balls

Cornwall made 49 off 16. Three fours, six sixes, and by the time he was out the chase was decided. Evin Lewis finished 23 not out and Amir Jangoo 4 not out as the Falcons got there with 88 balls to spare, one wicket down.

Nine wickets with 14.4 overs unused is an absurd margin for a knockout game between two sides good enough to reach the first qualifier. Guyana picked the worst possible night to fall apart.

What is left

The Falcons are through to the final on Sunday, with three days off and a settled attack. Guyana drop into Qualifier 2 against Jamaica Kingsmen on Friday, where the loser goes home and the winner gets a rematch with the team that just dismantled them, on 48 hours’ turnaround.

Shadab took the player-of-the-match award, which was never in doubt from the moment the ninth over ended.
