The ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam, the ground most fans simply call the Vizag stadium, opened in 2003, seats about 27,500 and has hosted three Tests, 11 men’s ODIs, five men’s T20Is, 17 IPL matches and five games of the 2025 Women’s World Cup. Its record points one way in white-ball cricket: win the toss, bowl first, and chase.
Rajkot, the other big Indian venue with a short international history, says the opposite, which makes the two worth reading side by side. The figures below come from ball-by-ball data for every match played here.

For years the ground carried the name of YS Rajasekhara Reddy, the former Andhra Pradesh chief minister, as the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium. The Andhra Cricket Association removed his name in March 2025, which is why older scorecards, and many records pages, still use the longer title. It is the same ground.
Vizag pitch report: bat or bowl first?
Bowl. In men’s ODIs the side chasing has won seven of the 11 matches here, the side batting first three, and one was tied. Eight of the 11 captains who won the toss chose to field. In T20Is every toss winner has fielded first, five out of five.
| Format | Games | 1st inns avg | Bat 1st won | Chased |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Men’s ODI | 11 | 276.4 | 3 | 7 |
| Men’s T20I | 5 | 162.0 | 2 | 3 |
| IPL | 17 | 169.5 | 9 | 8 |
| Women’s ODI (2025) | 5 | 235.8 | 0 | 5 |
The toss has decided a lot here. In the ten men’s ODIs that produced a result, the side that won the toss went on to win nine. The exception came in December 2019, when West Indies won it, chose to field, and watched India make 387 for 5.
The five women’s World Cup games in October 2025 make the point more bluntly. The side batting second won all five, including the biggest chase in women’s ODI history, and not one of those first innings reached 331. Compare that with Rajkot’s Niranjan Shah Stadium, where the side batting first has won four of five men’s ODIs and the first-innings average is 314.2.
The IPL is the exception. Across 17 games the split is 9-8, close to even, and the ground has been a floating home for five different franchises rather than one side’s fortress. Scoring there has moved with the rest of the league: the last four first-innings totals were 191, 272, 209 and 163.

India have had three of their better-remembered ODI days here. MS Dhoni’s 148 against Pakistan in the ground’s first international, in April 2005, was his maiden ODI hundred. In October 2018 Virat Kohli made 157 not out and became the fastest batter to 10,000 ODI runs, in his 205th innings, only for Shai Hope to hit the last ball for four and tie the match with 123 not out. And in December 2019 Rohit made 159, the ground’s highest ODI score, and Kuldeep Yadav took a hat-trick.
The worst day was March 2023. India were bowled out for 117 in 26 overs, Mitchell Starc taking 5/53, and Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh knocked the runs off in 11 overs. Australia won by ten wickets with 234 balls to spare.
