India’s Shubman Gill holds the record for the highest individual score in an ODI run chase. Chasing 406 against West Indies at Guwahati on 30 September 2026, he made 223 not out off 133 balls, taking the record from Glenn Maxwell, whose unbeaten 201 had stood since the 2023 World Cup.

Chasing 292 in November 2023, Glenn Maxwell scripted history as he smashed an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan to guide Australia to a thrilling three-wicket win during an ICC World Cup 2023 match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

With the help of the sensational knock, Maxwell became the first batter to register a double century during an ODI run chase. The Victoria-born cricketer also became the ninth batter and first Australian to score an ODI double hundred.

Rohit Sharma, Martin Guptill, Virender Sehwag, Chris Gayle, Fakhar Zaman, Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill and Sachin Tendulkar are the other eight batters to slam a double hundred in ODI cricket.

Maxwell reached his double ton in 128 balls, at the time the second-fastest in ODI cricket after India’s Ishan Kishan (126 balls). Gill’s 200 in 117 balls in 2026 is now the fastest of all.

Maxwell had overtaken Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman for the run-chase record.

Zaman held the previous record after he scored 193 off just 155 deliveries against South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg in 2021.

Fakhar, Shane Watson, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli complete the top six of the highest individual score in ODI run chases.

Shubman Gill | 223*

Shubman Gill holds the record for the highest individual score in an ODI run chase. Chasing 406 in the second ODI against West Indies at Guwahati on 30 September 2026, he made 223 not out off 133 balls with eight sixes, reaching his hundred in 62 balls and his double century in 117, the fastest ODI double hundred ever. His opening stand of 255 with Rohit Sharma, who made 101, set up an eight-wicket win with 39 balls to spare. At 406 for 2 it was India’s highest successful ODI chase and the second-highest by any side, behind South Africa’s 438 for 9 against Australia in 2006. It was Gill’s second ODI double century and the third-highest ODI score of all.

Glenn Maxwell | 201*

Swashbuckling Australian batter Glenn Maxwell etched his name in the history books with what was then the highest individual score in an ODI run chase. Maxwell clobbered 201 runs off just 128 balls to help Australia snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Afghanistan during an ODI World Cup 2023 clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Chasing a target of 292, Australia were reeling at 91/7 in 18.3 overs before Maxwell played a breathtaking knock to power his side to a memorable three-wicket win. His match-winning knock was laced with 21 fours and 10 sixes.

Fakhar Zaman | 193

Pakistan flamboyant batter Fakhar Zaman features third on the list of the highest individual score in an ODI run chase. Chasing 342 against South Africa, Fakhar Zaman hammered 193 off 155 balls in the second ODI of three-match series at the Wanderers in Johannesburg in 2021. Opening the innings, the left-handed batter slammed 18 fours and 10 sixes to keep Pakistan in the run chase. While Zaman was dismissed in the final over of the match, Pakistan fell short by 17 runs. However, Pakistan later won the three-match ODI series 2-1.

Shane Watson | 185*

Former Australia cricketer Shane Watson is fourth on the list of the highest individual score in an ODI run chase. Shane Watson scored an unbeaten 96-ball 185 to help Australia chase down 230 against Bangladesh in the second ODI of a three-match series in Mirpur in 2011. After restricting the hosts to 229/7 in their allotted 50 overs, Australia rode on Watson’s magnificent knock to secure a comprehensive nine-wicket victory. Watson’s knock was laced with 15 fours and 15 maximums. Australia won the three-match series 3-0.
