Former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli holds the record for most away runs in ODI cricket. He has 5612 runs in 127 away matches since 2008, at an average of 53.96 and a strike rate of 91.01, with 21 hundreds and 28 half-centuries. Both his average and his hundreds are the best of anyone with 4000 away runs.

Kohli went past Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara on 16 July 2026, making 65 against England in Cardiff. He had already become the fastest to 5000 away runs, reaching the mark in only his 107th away match with 63 in the third ODI against Australia in Canberra in December 2020.

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara is second. The wicket-keeper batsman tallied 5518 runs in 149 away games between 2000-2015, at an average and strike rate of 43.10 and 80.18, with 10 tons and 35 half-centuries.

The 2003 World Cup-winning captain, Ricky Ponting is third with 5090 runs in 132 away ODIs. Between 1995-2011, Ponting hit 10 away tons in the 50-over format with the highest score of 164.

The likes of Sachin Tendulkar and MS Dhoni complete the top five list of most away runs in ODI cricket. The Indian duo tallied 5065 and 4520 runs respectively and have 13 centuries between them. Rohit Sharma has joined the top ten with 4080. Sanath Jayasuriya, at 92.50, has the best strike rate of anyone with 4000 away runs.

Kohli also leads the charts for Indians with most away ODI runs. After Kohli, Tendulkar, Dhoni and Rohit, Rahul Dravid (3998 for India) and Sourav Ganguly (3468) complete the top six for India.
