India were 118 for 5 when the Bengaluru rain came back, and West Indies leave with the T20I series shared 2-2

Rain kept the players off until after 9pm, allowed 7.4 overs of cricket and then came back. The decider at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday never reached West Indies’ reply, the match was abandoned, and the five-match T20I series finished level at 2-2. Shreyas Iyer and Shai Hope shared the trophy.

West Indies will still go home pleased with it. India had won their last 12 home T20I series, a run that went back four years, and this is the side that ended it.

Nine overs, then 46 balls

The Chinnaswamy’s drainage had the outfield ready almost as soon as the rain stopped, and the umpires cut the game to nine overs a side. Hope won the toss and bowled first. India went at it from the first ball and had 118 for 5 when the rain returned.

Abhishek Sharma went in the first over, caught by Shamar Joseph off Keemo Paul for 6. Ishan Kishan then made 30 off ten balls, with three fours and two sixes, and Romario Shepherd’s only over cost 24. Joseph had Kishan caught by Rovman Powell in the third over, and Shamar Springer bowled Sanju Samson for 16.

The late hitting came from Naman Dhir. He faced six balls and finished 24 not out, three of them sixes, and Paul’s second over went for 20. Iyer made 22 off 14 before Paul had him caught, and Springer bowled Tilak Varma with the last ball before the covers came on. Springer finished with 2 for 17 from 1.4 overs, and Paul’s two took him to eight wickets, the most on either side in the series. Roston Chase, level with Paul on six going into the game, did not bowl.

West Indies needed five overs of batting to make it a game. The rain never eased enough for even that, and the umpires called it off.

Hope’s series

The series belonged to Hope. He batted four times, scored 261 runs at a strike rate above 190 and was out only twice, with unbeaten hundreds in both West Indies wins. The second of them, 102 not out in Hyderabad, made him the first West Indies batter to three T20I centuries. He was named player of the series.

India won the opener in Lucknow, where West Indies were bowled out for 171 and Iyer’s unbeaten 102 off 43 balls finished it inside 15 overs, and they won again in Indore. West Indies took the games in Ranchi and Hyderabad, and the Bengaluru rain made sure nobody got a third.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar will feel it more than most. He came in for Mayank Yadav to play his first T20I since 2022 and never got to bowl a ball.

Straight on to New Zealand

The turnaround is quick. India’s T20I squad was due to fly to New Zealand on Sunday morning, and the first of five T20Is there is on Thursday, 22 October. The ODIs and two Tests follow.

For West Indies, the tour ends with a 2-1 ODI series defeat and a drawn T20I series. In the only ODI where they batted second, in New Chandigarh, they chased a target of 352.
