Aaryavir Sehwag hit 124 of his 173 runs in boundaries for Delhi on Friday, and he still ended up on the losing side. Chandigarh’s Rupesh Yadav answered with 167, and Chandigarh won by five wickets in Vizianagaram with more than eight overs to spare.
Anvay Dravid had a better day. He made 151 off 100 balls against Gujarat, Karnataka chased down a revised target of 352, and the win put them into the Vinoo Mankad Trophy knockouts.
Sehwag’s 173 and a 29 for 4 that did not hold
Aaryavir is 18 and leads Delhi’s Under-19 side in this season’s competition, which began on 8 October. He batted the way people expect a Sehwag to bat. He and Arnav Bugga put on 98 for the first wicket in 13.2 overs, Bugga making 47 off 39, and when the middle order wobbled he added 89 for the fifth wicket with Shantanu Yadav. His 173 came off 143 balls with 19 fours and eight sixes, and he was out in the 46th over. Delhi finished on 289 for 6.
For a while that looked like plenty. Bugga took 4 for 58 with the ball and Chandigarh were 29 for 4. Then Rupesh Yadav took the game away. He made 167 off 125 balls, opener Meet Dahiya added 63, and Chandigarh reached 293 for 5 in 41.3 overs. Yadav had also taken two Delhi wickets.
Anvay Dravid’s second hundred in three innings
Gujarat’s 357 rested on a fifth-wicket stand of 217 between Sameer Bhandari and Yash Panjwani. Karnataka lost both openers inside 12 overs and were 63 for 2 when their captain came in at No. 4.
Anvay hit 20 fours and three sixes. He and Dhruv Krishnan, who also made a hundred, added more than 200 for the third wicket before Krishnan fell in the 38th over. Anvay went in the 44th, after another 61 with Aniketh Reddy, and Aniketh and Tejas Reddy saw the chase home. Karnataka finished on 352 for 5 in 45.3 overs and won by five wickets under the VJD method.
He has been in form all tournament. The Himachal Pradesh game was washed out, and his only failure was 18 in the defeat to Jharkhand. Otherwise it has been 104 off 62 balls against Chandigarh, 85 off 41 in the 198-run win over Delhi, and now this 151.
Delhi have been on the wrong end of both stories. Karnataka made 418 against them and bowled them out for 220, and on Friday their captain’s 173 was not enough against Chandigarh either.
