Viking were in Norway’s second tier in 2018, and Haugen’s 90th-minute header held ten-man Bayern to 3-3

Harry Kane scored twice and passed a Lionel Messi record in Stavanger, but Michael Olise’s red card let the Norwegian champions back in.

Viking were in Norway’s second tier in 2018, and Haugen’s 90th-minute header held ten-man Bayern to 3-3

Viking needed just over a minute to score against Bayern Munich, and 90 minutes to make sure the result stuck. The Norwegian champions drew 3-3 with the six-time European Cup winners in Stavanger on Tuesday night, and their equaliser came from a substitute who rose at the back post after Bayern had been reduced to ten men.

It is one of the biggest results in the club’s history. Viking were playing in Norway’s second tier in 2018. Their last Champions League campaign before this one was in 1992-93, when Barcelona knocked them out 1-0 on aggregate in the first round.

Two goals up at the break

Gianni Stensness opened the scoring from a corner, climbing above the Bayern defence to head in captain Zlatko Tripić’s delivery. Bayern had most of the ball after that, but Viking looked dangerous on the break, and in the 38th minute Peter Christiansen finished a quick counter past Jonas Urbig to make it 2-0.

Bayern had opened their campaign by beating Bodø/Glimt 5-0. Here they went in at half-time two down to a side that had lost 3-1 at Stuttgart on matchday one.

Kane, Díaz and a red card

Harry Kane started the comeback in the 54th minute with a penalty, given after a VAR check. Six minutes later Joshua Kimmich crossed and Kane headed the equaliser. On 71 minutes Bayern were in front: Kane swept the ball out to Konrad Laimer, and Luis Díaz finished his cut-back.

That should have been the end of it. Instead Michael Olise picked up two yellow cards in the same passage of play, the first for a foul to stop a counter and the second for throwing the ball into Tripić’s face. Bayern played the rest of the game a man short. Viking pushed. In the 90th minute Tripić crossed and substitute Herman Haugen headed in at the far post.

“This red card was super dumb,” Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said afterwards. He added that Olise knew he had let the team down. Olise will miss Bayern’s home game against Arsenal on 21 October.

Tripić was happy to take some credit for that. He told TV 2 he had distracted Olise before the ball came at him, and said: “I feel like I won the battle against him today.”

Kane passes Messi

Kane’s two goals took him to 36 in 40 Champions League games since his 30th birthday, one more than Lionel Messi managed in his thirties. The 33-year-old has now scored in nine Champions League appearances in a row. Ruud van Nistelrooy, Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only other players to have done that, and Ronaldo’s record stands at 11. None of it will be much comfort to Kompany.

Two coaches and a plastic pitch

Viking won the Norwegian title last season for the first time in 34 years. They are run by two head coaches, Morten Jensen and Bjarte Lunde Aarsheim, who took over together in 2021, and they play their home games on an artificial pitch. To reach the league phase they had to get past Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb.

The draw gives them their first point. Bayern have four from two games. Viking go to Aston Villa on 21 October, the same night Arsenal visit Munich.
