Vagnoman scored at both ends inside six minutes, and Bayern’s title defence started 5-1

Josha Vagnoman had the best six minutes and the worst six minutes of anyone in Munich on Friday. He equalised for Stuttgart early in the second half, which briefly made the Bundesliga’s opening night a contest. Then he put the ball into his own net, and it was 3-1, and it was over.

Bayern Munich beat Stuttgart 5-1 to start the defence of their title. Five different names on the scoresheet, one of them a Stuttgart defender.

Olise ran the evening

Stuttgart actually started the better of the two. Tiago Tomás hit the crossbar from close range inside the opening exchanges, and for a while the greasy pitch was doing more for them than for the hosts. Dayot Upamecano ended that on 21 minutes, climbing to head in a Joshua Kimmich corner.

Vagnoman’s equaliser came shortly after the interval. Michael Olise restored the lead on 55 with a finish that needed no backlift, and Vagnoman turned the next Bayern attack past his own goalkeeper within three minutes of that. Olise had already struck a free-kick against the post and finished the night as the game’s outstanding player. Bayern’s expected goals figure was 4.07 to Stuttgart’s 1.09, which for once reads like an understatement rather than a correction.

The substitutes took the last two

Ismael Saibari came on for his first Bundesliga appearance since joining from PSV in July and set up Aleksandar Pavlović for the fourth on 82 minutes. Luis Díaz got the fifth two minutes into stoppage time. Harry Kane, who has scored freely against Stuttgart down the years, had a quiet one and was taken off late with the game long gone.

A familiar way to start

Vincent Kompany changed two from the side that won the Supercup at Borussia Dortmund, bringing Upamecano back into the centre of defence. By the hour mark the changes had stopped mattering. Bayern have now gone 15 seasons without losing their opening league fixture. This was also a rerun of last season’s German Cup final, which Bayern won, and Stuttgart have now been on the wrong end of the same fixture twice inside four months.

Konrad Laimer, asked about Olise afterwards, said he plays on instinct and reacts before opponents do, and that it is fun to be on the pitch with him. On this evidence Stuttgart would agree with the first half of that.
