Spain meet a stubborn Austria in Los Angeles with the last 16 at stake
European champions Spain are favourites against Austria in the World Cup last 32, but a question over Lamine Yamal’s fitness and a fearless opponent give the tie an edge.

Spain came into this World Cup as many people’s team to beat, and the last 32 gives them a test with a nasty edge to it. Austria are exactly the kind of opponent nobody in a favourite’s shirt wants this early, organised, physical and fresh off a group stage that showed they will keep swinging until the final whistle. The two meet in Los Angeles on Thursday July 2, with kick-off around midday local time, which works out at roughly 12:30am IST on July 3.
Spain look the part, but lean heavily on Yamal
La Roja topped Group H, though the ride was not entirely smooth. They opened with a flat 0-0 draw against the eventual surprise package Cape Verde, then found their rhythm in a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia in which Lamine Yamal produced a goal, before edging Uruguay 1-0 to seal top spot.
That middle game is the one that lingers, because it showed how much of Spain’s threat runs through the teenager. Yamal was electric against Saudi Arabia, quieter against Cape Verde and only a peripheral figure in the win over Uruguay, and there has been talk that he is carrying a knock. If he is anywhere near full fitness, Spain have the passing and movement to pick almost anyone apart. If he is muffled, they can look strangely blunt for a squad this deep.
Austria arrive with nothing to lose
Austria reached the knockouts the hard way, out of a Group J that also contained Argentina. They started with a 3-1 win over Jordan, ran into Lionel Messi and lost 2-0 to the reigning champions, then produced the group’s wildest night, a 3-3 draw with Algeria settled by Sasa Kalajdzic’s stoppage-time equaliser that sealed second place behind Argentina and a knockout berth for the first time since 1982.
It is not a vintage Austria side, but it is a stubborn one, and it will not be overawed by the badge on the other bench. They defend in numbers, break with intent and have already proved this month that they can score three in a game when the situation demands it. Against a Spain team that occasionally overpasses in the final third, a low block with a threat on the counter is a plan with a puncher’s chance.
Favourites, but not a free pass
Spain should have too much for Austria over 90 minutes, and the bookmakers price it that way. The margin, though, feels thinner than the reputations suggest. Knockout football rewards teams that stay calm when the favourite grows anxious, and if Yamal is not at his best, this is the sort of tie that can drift toward a nervy extra 30 minutes.
Win it and Spain move into the last 16 with their status as one of the tournament’s leading sides intact. Slip up, and it becomes the shock of the round. Austria will happily settle for keeping it level deep into the night and seeing what that does to Spanish nerves.
