Sinayoko scored after 25 seconds, and Paris FC had never won at Marseille before

Twenty-five seconds. That is how long the Velodrome stayed quiet on Sunday before Luca Koleosho got in behind the Marseille defence, squared it, and Lassine Sinayoko put Paris FC ahead. He scored twice more. Paris FC won 3-2, and they had never won at Marseille before.

Gouiri twice pulled it back, and it made no difference

Marseille were level inside eight minutes. Adama Camara miscued a back pass and Amine Gouiri, who now has four goals in Marseille’s first three league games, did not need a second invitation.

Sinayoko headed the second in the 19th, unmarked, from a Pablo Pagis cross. Gouiri levelled again nine minutes into the second half with a volley from a tight angle, and for half an hour after that Marseille pushed for a winner. What they got instead was Moses Simon’s shot striking CJ Egan-Riley on the arm, a VAR review, and a penalty in the 85th minute. Sinayoko took it himself and had his hat-trick.

Nobody has done that to Marseille at home for fourteen years

The French sports press made Sinayoko the first player to score a hat-trick against Marseille at the Velodrome in fourteen years. Paris FC, meanwhile, had never won there at all. Two records in one evening is a lot for a club playing its second season back in the top flight.

Paris FC are second, on seven points from three games, behind Monaco and unbeaten. Liam Rosenior, who replaced Antoine Kombouare this summer, was not interested in any of it afterwards. “For now, I just want to win the next match,” he said. “We believe we can achieve something in the long run by building things up. But in the short term, we have to keep working hard, stay humble and focus only on the next game.”

Marseille opened with four and have lost two since

Bruno Genesio’s side beat Strasbourg 4-0 on the opening weekend. They have lost both games since and sit 10th. Gouiri’s goals in all three are keeping his own season going; the rest of it is not going anywhere yet.

The three they conceded were three different problems. Beaten in behind inside 25 seconds, a free header from a cross on 19 minutes, a handball in their own box with five minutes left. Only the handball was luck. Three goals of three different kinds in one game is a defence that has not settled. Marseille go to Rennes on Friday.
