Richarlison has had three exits collapse, and he is out of Tottenham’s league squad until January

Richarlison has now had three exits fall apart in a single summer. Everton on deadline day, Trabzonspor after that, and on Friday night Vasco da Gama, who agreed a fee with Tottenham and then could not agree wages with the player. The Brazilian window shut at 4am on Saturday. He is still a Tottenham player, and he is not in their Premier League squad.

The Vasco deal died on personal terms, again

According to BBC Sport, Spurs and Vasco had an agreement in place for the 29-year-old to go home. What they did not have was a contract Richarlison would sign, and with the Brazilian window closing there was no time to find a middle ground. The same thing killed the Everton move: a return to Goodison was agreed at £35 million and then came apart over wages and the settlement of his Spurs contract.

The Everton deal had a second moving part too. Iliman Ndiaye was supposed to go the other way. Instead he went to Manchester City for £65 million, Everton banked the money, and the Richarlison half of the idea never happened.

De Zerbi says it was not his call

Roberto De Zerbi left Richarlison out of Tottenham’s 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season and sent him to train with the Under-21s. Asked about it, the head coach put the decision back on the player.

“I think Richarlison, he decided everything alone,” De Zerbi said. “He spoke with me at the beginning of pre-season. He told me his idea, his desire was to leave.”

De Zerbi has also said three of his players asked to leave in the summer. Richarlison is the one whose exit request became public, and the one still without a club to move to.

What is left

Clubs can change their Premier League squad list in the January window, so that is the earliest he could be registered again. Until then there is no league football for him, and no cup football unless Tottenham choose to use him there.

His contract expires at the end of the season, with Tottenham holding an option to extend it by another year. BBC Sport reports he wants to be released from it, which would let him leave on a free. Whether Spurs will let a forward they bought from Everton in 2022 walk out for nothing is a different question, and they have not answered it.

The player whose scissor kick against Serbia was voted FIFA’s goal of the 2022 World Cup is now training with a youth side in north London, waiting for a window that opens in three and a half months. However this ends, nobody involved got what they wanted in September.

Keep up with the Premier League
