Paris Saint-Germain have won the last five Ligue 1 titles. Three games into the sixth attempt they are twelfth, and Monaco have now beaten them three times in a row.
Monaco won 2-1 at the Parc des Princes overnight, which sounds like a smash-and-grab and mostly was. PSG led at half-time, had the better of the first hour, and then conceded twice to a team that spent the second half waiting for them to overcommit.
Two counters and a loose ball
Marquinhos got the opener on 31 minutes, chesting in a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia cross that Monaco had not accounted for. Before that Desire Doue had two decent looks and Lukas Hradecky saved both.
The equaliser on 58 minutes came from PSG failing to clear. Jordan Teze got the ball back into the box and Flavio Nazinho put it away. Fourteen minutes later Stanis Idumbo hit one from distance past Matvey Safonov, and there was nothing clever about the build-up to either. Both goals came on the break.
PSG then did what teams do at 2-1 down at home. Maghnes Akliouche, signed from Monaco this summer, had a goal chalked off for offside against his old club. Another PSG finish was ruled out. Hradecky produced the save of the night from Ousmane Dembele. None of it counted.
The table is not a joke yet
PSG have two points from three matches. Two draws and this. They have scored five and conceded six, which is a strange line for a squad this expensive, and twelfth place puts them below Strasbourg, Angers and Brest.
Three games is three games, and this will probably look silly by November. What makes it worth watching now is who is above them. Monaco have won all three, scored five and conceded one. Lyon and Lille sit behind them on seven points each.
Luis Enrique is not under any real pressure. He signed a contract extension to 2030 and he has the five titles to point at. But he now has to fix a defence that has conceded twice on the counter at home, and he has to do it against a Monaco team that has his number.
Three in a row against the champions
That is the detail that lifts this above a bad night. Monaco have beaten PSG in three consecutive meetings now. Against a club that has won the league five years running and can outspend everyone in France without noticing, one team keeps finding the same way through, and it is not a complicated way. Sit in, stay compact, break at speed.
PSG will almost certainly be champions again in May. That is what happens when the gap in resources is this wide. Monaco have spent three matches making the point that being certain to win the league and being good right now are different things.
