Lucas Digne is heading back to where his career started. Paris Saint-Germain have agreed a deal to re-sign the France left-back from Aston Villa, moving to trigger a release clause reported at around 10 million euros for a player they see as cover and competition down the left of their defence.
A bargain for the European champions
For the reigning Champions League holders, the outlay barely registers. Digne, 32, joined Aston Villa from Everton in January 2022 and settled in as a dependable Premier League full-back, with an earlier spell at Barcelona too. His release clause made him one of the cheaper experienced defenders on the market this summer. PSG did not have to haggle. They simply met the figure written into his contract and got their man.
It is the kind of low-risk business a club of PSG’s standing can do without blinking. They are not paying a premium for a first-choice starter or gambling on an unproven talent. They are adding a seasoned international who has played in the Premier League, La Liga and now Ligue 1, and who knows exactly what he is walking into.
Backup to Nuno Mendes, but not just a spectator
On paper, Digne arrives as understudy to Nuno Mendes, who has nailed down the left-back spot under Luis Enrique. But the sense from Paris is that this is not a signing made simply to warm the bench. Mendes has had fitness problems, and cover of real quality in that position was a gap the squad needed to close.
Reports suggest coach Luis Enrique and sporting advisor Luis Campos have assured Digne he will get a meaningful share of minutes rather than sit as a permanent reserve. For a 32-year-old who still wants regular football, that promise matters as much as the badge.
A homecoming for a Paris boy
There is a neat symmetry to the move. Digne grew up in the Paris region and supported PSG as a boy, and he played for the club between 2013 and 2016 before leaving to build a career across Europe. Now, a decade on and with more than fifty France caps behind him, he returns to the side he watched as a kid.
That kind of story tends to land well with a home crowd, and it gives PSG a dressing-room voice who understands the club from the inside. Digne is not the raw prospect he was when he first left, but a more complete footballer, and a useful one to have around a squad chasing more silverware.
A deal to be wrapped up after the World Cup
The transfer is expected to be finalised once the 2026 World Cup is over, with Digne currently part of the France squad at the tournament in North America. Completing it now, while the players are still involved on the international stage, would be awkward, so both clubs look set to tie off the paperwork when the summer’s football calendar clears.
For Villa, it is another departure to absorb in a busy window. For PSG, it is a quiet, sensible piece of squad-building that strengthens a position they could not afford to leave thin.
