Olympic football: Paris 2024 results, medallists and what changes at LA 2028
Spain won the men gold at Paris 2024 and the United States the women. Full medal table, final group standings, knockout results, top scorers and the LA 2028 format change.

Spain won the men’s football gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, beating France 5-3 after extra time, and the United States won the women’s gold with a 1-0 win over Brazil. Both finals were played at the Parc des Princes.

The men’s final on 9 August 2024 was the best game of either tournament. France led inside 11 minutes through Enzo Millot; Spain scored three in ten minutes through Fermin Lopez twice and Alex Baena to lead 3-1; Maghnes Akliouche pulled one back on 79 minutes and Jean-Philippe Mateta equalised from the penalty spot in the third minute of stoppage time to make it 3-3. Sergio Camello then settled it in extra time, scoring on 100 minutes and again in the 121st. It was Spain’s second Olympic men’s title and their first since Barcelona 1992.
Morocco took bronze by beating Egypt 6-0, and their forward Soufiane Rahimi finished as the men’s tournament’s top scorer with eight goals.

Spain and Argentina both finished second in their groups and still met very different fates — Spain went on to win the whole thing, Argentina lost 1-0 to France in the quarter-finals.

Women’s football: final group standings
One row in this table looks broken and is not. Canada won all three of their group matches and finished on three points, because FIFA docked them six points during the tournament.

The deduction followed a drone-spying scandal: Canada staff were found to have flown a drone over New Zealand’s training sessions before the opening match. Three members of the coaching staff, including head coach Bev Priestman, were banned from football for a year, Canada Soccer was fined, and the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Canada’s appeal against the points penalty mid-tournament.
The remarkable part is that it very nearly did not matter. Starting on minus six meant Canada had to win all three matches simply to reach zero, and they did — beating New Zealand, France and Colombia — which was enough to qualify for the quarter-finals anyway. They went out there, losing to Germany on penalties after a goalless draw.

Mallory Swanson scored the only goal of the final, and it was the United States’ fifth Olympic women’s football gold. France’s Marie-Antoinette Katoto was the tournament’s top scorer with five.
Spain’s women arrived as world champions and left with nothing, beaten in the semi-final and then in the bronze match — which finished barely three hours before Spain’s men kicked off the final that won them gold, on the same evening in the same city. Spanish football was in the middle of a remarkable run either way: the senior men had won Euro 2024 a few weeks before the Games, and have since added the 2026 World Cup.
Why Olympic football is an under-23 tournament
Only the men’s event has an age limit. At Paris 2024 men’s squads were restricted to players born on or after 1 January 2001 — under-23 — with up to three overage players allowed per squad. The women’s tournament has no age restriction at all, which is why it fields full senior national teams and the men’s does not.
The rule exists to stop the Olympics competing with the World Cup as football’s senior showpiece. It is also why an Olympic gold is not treated as the equivalent of a World Cup in the men’s game, and why it is treated as a major honour in the women’s game.
What changes at LA 2028
The next Olympic football tournament is at Los Angeles 2028, and the format is being reshaped. The women’s event grows from 12 teams to 16, while the men’s event shrinks from 16 to 12.
That will make it the first Olympics to field more women’s football teams than men’s. The IOC put the change down to the growth of women’s team sport, particularly in the United States. Matches will be spread across seven American cities.
