Newcastle spend the Tonali money on 20-year-old Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba

Newcastle United have signed Aladji Bamba from Monaco on a five-year deal, and the numbers tell you exactly how the club plans to replace Sandro Tonali. Bamba is a defensive midfielder who turned 20 on 14 July. The fee is around 41 million euros including five million in add-ons, close to £35m, for a player with one season of senior football behind him.
A third of the Tonali fee, eight years younger
Tonali left for Tottenham this window for £100m, the sort of sum that usually buys a proven replacement. Newcastle went the other way. Bamba made 18 Ligue 1 appearances last season plus two cup games and five in the Champions League, which is a thin body of evidence by Premier League standards but a good deal more than most 19-year-olds get at a club playing in Europe.
He is French, of Guinean descent, and has come up through the France youth teams at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-20 level. Eddie Howe was careful to frame the signing as a project rather than a plug. “I’m really pleased to see Aladji become a Newcastle United player,” Howe said. “He’s another exciting, young signing who we’re really looking forward to working with.”
Bamba completed his medical on Tyneside on Thursday and did not sound like a player worried about the step up. “I’m very happy to be here. It’s a new challenge and I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “I was very excited when I heard Newcastle were interested in signing me.”
The Bruno Guimaraes problem has not gone away
Signing a 20-year-old holding midfielder does nothing to settle the bigger question in that part of the pitch. Arsenal have agreed personal terms with Bruno Guimaraes and are expected to test Newcastle with an offer of around £70m. Newcastle’s answer so far has been that their captain is not for sale, with a valuation upwards of £80m attached to him anyway, while Guimaraes himself has told the club he would like to move on after last season.
The messaging has been deliberate. Newcastle put Guimaraes at the front of Thursday’s new away kit launch, and he is expected to report for training next week and travel to the pre-season camp in Spain. If he goes, Bamba is not a replacement so much as the first half of one.
A window run on under-21s
Bamba joins Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Sean Steur as summer arrivals who are all under 21, which is a policy rather than a coincidence. The money funding it came from selling in the other direction, most of it from Tonali and from Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona for a fee reported at close to £70m.
Whether it works depends on how quickly a Ligue 1 kid can handle being the deepest midfielder in a side that plays in front of a demanding crowd. Howe has shown he will trust young players once they earn it. Bamba has five years to.
