Michael Olise scored his first Bayern hat-trick, and Harry Kane reached 100 Bundesliga goals in 98 games

Union Berlin lasted 18 minutes on Friday night. Jamal Musiala scored then, and by the time Michael Olise finished the job in the 76th minute the scoreboard in Munich read seven.

Olise took three of them, the first hat-trick he has scored for the club. Harry Kane took two, and the first of those rewrote a record that had stood since the 1970s.

Kane got there in 98 games

Kane’s 100th Bundesliga goal was a penalty in the 39th minute, which made it 2-0. Olise’s first arrived four minutes later and sent Bayern in three up at the interval.

The penalty came in Kane’s 98th Bundesliga appearance. Dieter Müller, scoring for Cologne in the 1970s, had held the record at 129 games, so Kane has knocked 31 matches off it. He is 33, he signed from Tottenham in the summer of 2023, and he is now scoring a Bundesliga goal roughly every 78 minutes. He also took the Torjägerkanone in each of his first three seasons in Germany, which no player had managed before him.

Olise’s second treble of the year

Olise’s night was the odder story. He curled his first in from the top of the box just before half-time, then scored twice inside three minutes midway through the second half, in the 73rd and the 76th. Before Friday, the only hat-trick of his career had come in a France shirt, in a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland on 8 June, their last match before the World Cup.

Ismael Saibari got the fifth in the 70th minute, having come off the bench, and it was his first goal in the Bundesliga.

Four games, ten points

Bayern sit top with 10 points from four matches, three wins and a draw, 14 scored and two conceded. Both of the results that had raised an eyebrow came against promoted sides: the goalless draw at Schalke, where Loris Karius kept them out for the full 90, and a 2-1 win over Elversberg. Friday was the first time this season the champions have spent a whole match looking like champions.

Union have one point from their four games, a draw and three defeats, and have now conceded seven in a single night in Munich.
