John Stones agrees a two-year Inter deal and flies to Milan for a medical

The signature is the only thing missing. Stones settled personal terms with Inter over the weekend, and reports in Italy have him landing in Milan on Thursday, 30 July, for his medical. The contract waiting for him runs to June 2028 and is worth in the region of four million euros a season net.

For a 32-year-old centre-back who has spent two years fighting his own body, that is a soft landing. Free agents with his medal collection do not stay on the market long.

A decade at City, and two years of it lost

Stones left Manchester City when his contract ran out on 30 June. Ten seasons, six Premier League titles, a Champions League, and a place in the back line of the treble side. Very few English defenders of his generation will retire with a cabinet like it.

The ending was quieter than the middle. He managed 439 Premier League minutes in his final season and 547 the year before, a two-season stretch broken up by thigh, calf and muscle problems that never quite cleared. Even in his best years he was rotated and rested, never quite nailing down an ever-present run in the side. City did not offer fresh terms, and both sides seemed to accept that as the natural end.

Juventus made a late call, Arsenal and Chelsea looked

He had options. Juventus made contact over the weekend, and both Arsenal and Chelsea registered interest in a defender who would have cost them nothing but wages. Inter got the agreement done first.

Part of the pull is familiar. Manuel Akanji, who played alongside Stones in that City defence, made his own move to Inter permanent this year. The coach adds to the case too: Cristian Chivu took the Serie A title and the Coppa Italia in his first season in charge, and a squad coming off a domestic double is an easier room to walk into than a rebuild.

The bet Inter are making

Nobody at San Siro is signing a 32-year-old free agent expecting 45 games. The value is in the other direction: no fee, a two-year deal rather than four, and a defender who can pass out from the back in a league where that skill still separates teams.

The fitness question is real, and Inter have priced it in. Stones did come through a World Cup summer with England, which is more than either of his last two club seasons gave him. If Inter get a full half-season of him at a time, a free transfer on those wages looks like good business. If the muscle problems return, they have lost very little beyond the salary.

Serie A tends to reward defenders who read the game rather than sprint it. Stones has always been the former. At 32, with the medical booked and the terms agreed, he is about to find out whether that translates.
