Inter have lost seven of their last eight Champions League games, and Tresoldi’s hat-trick gave Club Brugge a 4-3 win at San Siro

Club Brugge’s 22-year-old striker scored three times in Milan, and Yann Sommer won on his first trip back to his old club.

Inter have lost seven of their last eight Champions League games, and Tresoldi’s hat-trick gave Club Brugge a 4-3 win at San Siro

Yann Sommer spent three seasons in goal at San Siro and left Inter when his contract ran out in June. On Tuesday night he went back with Club Brugge, conceded three times, and still walked off a winner. Nicolò Tresoldi scored a hat-trick in a 4-3 win that leaves Inter with no points from two games in the Champions League league phase.

Cristian Chivu admitted afterwards that the run is worrying, and it is hard to argue. Inter have now lost seven of their last eight Champions League matches, and four in a row once you count both legs of last season’s play-off defeat to Bodø/Glimt.

Tresoldi does the damage

Brugge went ahead on the half-hour. Carlos Forbs broke away after an Inter corner, Hakan Çalhanoğlu brought him down in the box, and Tresoldi put the penalty past Josep Martínez.

Inter were level a minute before the break. Marcus Thuram and Federico Dimarco combined down the left, and Lautaro Martínez held off his marker, turned and finished.

The second half belonged to Forbs and Tresoldi. On 63 minutes a long ball left the Inter goalkeeper and his defenders in two minds. Josep Martínez came off his line, Forbs got there first, and Tresoldi had an empty net to tap into. Eleven minutes later the goalkeeper saved from Forbs and Tresoldi tucked in the rebound for his hat-trick.

Tresoldi is 22, born in Cagliari, and plays his international football for Germany at under-21 level. He joined Brugge from Hannover 96 in June 2025 and has still not settled which senior national team he will play for. Sommer, asked about that before the game, said it was up to the player. He was happier to talk about the striker himself: “Tresoldi can, without any doubt, become a top European striker.”

A late scramble at both ends

Lautaro got one back on 81 minutes, reacting first after Sommer saved from Petar Sučić. Inter pushed for an equaliser and left the back door open. Forbs slipped Romeo Vermant through the middle with three minutes left, and the substitute dinked it over Josep Martínez to make it 4-2.

Ange-Yoan Bonny cut in from the left and curled one past Sommer in the third minute of stoppage time. It was the last goal of the night and too late to matter. Forbs won the penalty and set up two of the goals.

These are the first points of the campaign for Ivan Leko’s side. Inter lost 2-1 at Real Madrid on matchday one.

“I couldn’t say it’s not worrying”

Chivu did not hide behind the scoreline. He said his players had lost their heads once Brugge went 2-1 up.

“Frustration set in, we got frenetic, lost our balance and then from the 2-1 it all went wrong,” he said. “I couldn’t say it’s not worrying, obviously we have things we need to re-evaluate. I must be the first to take responsibility, because perhaps I cannot find the right balance.”

Inter missed out on a top-eight finish by a single point last season and paid for it in the play-off. Six league-phase games remain this time. With no points from the first two, one more defeat and they could be chasing a play-off place again.
