Brunner scored twice at the Louis II, and Monaco are the only Ligue 1 side with two wins
Marseille scored four on the opening weekend and none at the Stade Louis II, where a 20-year-old Monaco signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2024 got both goals.

On 20 August, Paris Brunner scored his first competitive goal for Monaco, two years after they signed him. On Sunday evening he scored twice against Marseille at the Stade Louis II, which is the sort of fortnight that changes how a 20-year-old is talked about.
A header, then a run in behind
The first goal arrived in the 13th minute. Aleksandr Golovin put the cross in, Brunner got up between two defenders and headed it past the goalkeeper. Straightforward, well timed, and it set the tone for a game Marseille never really got into.
The second was better. Just after Timothy Weah had come close at the other end, Brunner chased a long ball, got away from the Marseille defence, cut inside as if he had all afternoon and put it in at the far post. Fifty-three minutes gone, 2-0, and that was the match.
Lamine Camara was Monaco’s other standout, dictating things in midfield for most of the evening. Marseille had won their opening match 4-0 and arrived expecting to be in this one. They created little, and a side that scored four on the first weekend has now gone a full match without a goal.
Brunner waited two years for the first one
Monaco paid Borussia Dortmund four million euros for Brunner in 2024 and then sent him to Cercle Brugge on loan, which is the standard route for a young forward at a club with Monaco’s academy pipeline. He came back in 2025. The competitive goals did not follow for a long time.
The wait ended on 20 August in Poland, when he headed in Monaco’s third in a 3-2 first-leg win over Gornik Zabrze in the Conference League play-off. Monaco won the second leg 4-1 and went through 7-3. Six goals in seven pre-season friendlies had already suggested something was coming. Two in one league match against Marseille is the part people will remember.
Six points from two, and nobody else has that
Filipe Luis has Monaco top of Ligue 1 with the only perfect record left in the division. They started with a 1-0 win at Le Havre on 23 August, Eric Dier heading in after 14 minutes, and they have not conceded in either match.
Paris Saint-Germain, meanwhile, still have not won a league game this season. They were two goals down at Lille with six minutes left on Friday and rescued a 2-2, which is a good escape and a bad start at the same time. Two rounds is nothing, and Monaco know that better than most, but at the top of the table on 31 August it is their name and not PSG’s.
