Brentford agree 48 million euros for Mamadou Sangare, a record for both clubs
Lens and Brentford have an agreement in principle worth 48 million euros plus bonuses for the Mali midfielder, more than the Bees have ever spent and more than Lens have ever received.

Brentford have never paid more than 30 million pounds for a footballer. On Tuesday they agreed to pay around 41 million for one, and Lens have never sold anybody for more.
The two clubs have an agreement in principle for Mamadou Sangare worth 48 million euros plus bonuses, with Lens keeping a slice of any future sale. The story came from Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna and has been widely reported since. Nothing is signed, and the final details still have to be settled before either club says anything official, but Brentford are the ones holding the deal.
A year in Ligue 1 and an award
Sangare is 24, a left-footed central midfielder, and a Mali international. Lens bought him from Rapid Vienna in August 2025 for a fee reported at under 10 million euros on a five-year contract, which now looks like one of the better pieces of business in French football.
He gave them three goals and four assists in his first Ligue 1 season and won the Marc-Vivien Foe award for the best African player in the league, the first Malian to take it. He is a ball-winner who does not stop once he has won it. He takes possession off his own defenders and carries it forward rather than recycling it sideways, which is a rarer skill than the fee makes it sound.
Lens are dismantling a very good year
Lens finished second in Ligue 1 last season, qualified for the Champions League league phase, and beat Nice 3-1 on 22 May to win the Coupe de France for the first time in their history. Two months on, the coach who delivered all of it has gone and the midfielder who ran it is going.
Pierre Sage left in June for Crystal Palace on a three-year contract. Sangare’s exit would beat Lois Openda’s 40 million euro move to RB Leipzig in 2023 as the biggest sale the club has made. Champions League football tends to come with a bill attached, and Lens are paying theirs in personnel.
Brentford keep selling high and buying higher
The Bees can afford this because of what they have been sending the other way. Bryan Mbeumo went to Manchester United for 65 million pounds last year, and Igor Thiago, their previous record signing at about 30 million from Club Brugge in 2024, is now valued in a bracket that made Chelsea, United and Tottenham enquire earlier this summer. Nathan Collins at 23 million was the record before Thiago. Sangare would clear all of it.
There is a hole to fill too. Jordan Henderson is expected to leave for Chelsea on a free, an arrangement Brentford agreed to honour, which takes 32 Premier League appearances and the senior voice out of Keith Andrews’ midfield in one go. Signing a 24-year-old who has just been named the best African player in Ligue 1 is not a like-for-like replacement. It is a different bet entirely.
Who else was in it
Manchester United were credited with interest last month and did not follow it through at this price. Crystal Palace were the live threat as late as Tuesday night, for the obvious reason that Sage knows exactly what he would be signing. Brentford moved quickly enough to close the door before a bidding war started, and Lens held Sangare out of a pre-season fixture while the talks ran.
