A year left on his contract turns Antonio Silva into a 25 million euro Bournemouth signing
Bournemouth have agreed 25 million euros plus five million in add-ons with Benfica for the Portugal centre-back, who turned down an extension and has a year left on his deal. He flew to England on Friday for a medical.

A few years ago António Silva was the centre-back every big club in Europe had a file on, and the numbers attached to him started with an eight. On Friday he left Lisbon on a flight to England for a medical at Bournemouth, who have agreed to pay Benfica 25 million euros for him, with another five million in add-ons.
A contract running down does this to a price
Silva’s Benfica deal runs to 30 June 2027, and he turned down the extension they offered him. That left the club with the choice every selling club hates: take what is on the table now, or watch him leave for nothing in twelve months. Benfica took the money.
The gap between what he was once valued at and what he has gone for is the whole story. He has been written about as an 85 million pound defender at various points, and Liverpool were reported to have kept him on a shortlist of centre-backs. None of that survives a contract with a year left on it. Bournemouth’s fee, an initial 21.4 million pounds with 4.3 million in add-ons, sits close to his current market valuation rather than his reputation.
What Bournemouth are getting
Silva is 22 and turns 23 in October. He joined Benfica’s Seixal academy roughly a decade ago and has made 183 appearances for the club across all competitions, Champions League and Europa League included, plus 20 caps for Portugal. He started Benfica’s 5-0 second-leg win over St Gallen in Europa League qualifying on Thursday, a result that turned a 2-1 first-leg defeat into a comfortable aggregate win, and he was on a plane the following day.
Marco Rose, who replaced Andoni Iraola at Bournemouth this summer, had already stopped pretending otherwise. Speaking to BBC Sport on 26 July, he said: “It is no secret we want this player. We are in negotiations and the player is very close. It is not for me to say more. We want this player, he wants to join us and the clubs are talking. We are waiting for him.”
Silva is expected to sign a five-year contract, which would run to 2031. Neither club has announced anything yet, and until the medical is signed off, nothing is done.
The Senesi hole
Bournemouth needed this. Marcos Senesi’s contract expired on 1 July and he joined Tottenham Hotspur on a free, a four-year deal to 2030, after 128 appearances and four seasons on the south coast. Losing a first-choice centre-back for no fee turns a squad plan into a scramble, and replacing him has been the priority all summer.
There are three weeks until the Premier League season starts on 22 August and a month until the window shuts at 11pm UK time on 1 September. Rose gets a 22-year-old international with 183 senior appearances behind him, at a price that exists only because of where Silva’s contract happens to sit. Benfica will feel that one for a while.
