Real Madrid and Manchester City have become one of the Champions League’s regular fixtures. They have met 17 times in the competition since 2012, including seven two-legged knockout ties, and never in another competitive match.

Widely regarded as the best football club of all time, Real Madrid are Spain’s most decorated team, with a record 36 La Liga titles.

They have also won more UEFA Champions League titles (15) than any other club, along with 20 Copa del Rey triumphs and a record five FIFA Club World Cups.

Manchester City do not have Real Madrid’s history, but under Pep Guardiola they became the dominant side in England. They have 10 English league titles, six of them in the seven seasons from 2017-18 to 2023-24, plus eight FA Cups and nine League Cups, the latest of both in 2025-26.

City won the Champions League for the first time in 2023, knocking Real Madrid out 5-1 on aggregate in the semi-finals on the way. Their only European trophy before that was the 1970 Cup Winners’ Cup.

Here, we take a closer look at how the two clubs have fared against each other since their first meeting in 2012.
