Saka limped off after ten minutes, and Declan Rice’s 82nd-minute goal earned Arsenal a 2-2 draw at Bayern

Harry Kane set one up and scored a penalty, but Arsenal came back from 2-1 down in Munich, and their run of 14 straight league-phase wins is over.

Saka limped off after ten minutes, and Declan Rice’s 82nd-minute goal earned Arsenal a 2-2 draw at Bayern

Arsenal came to the Allianz Arena having won 14 Champions League league-phase games in a row. They left with a 2-2 draw, a point that looked out of reach until the 82nd minute, and a worry over Bukayo Saka, who went off after ten minutes holding his thigh.

Declan Rice saved the night. Bayern Munich led 2-1 through Harry Kane’s penalty and were pushing for a third when Rice ran onto a lay-off from the substitute Viktor Gyökeres and drove a low shot into the corner. The run of wins is over, but Arsenal stay unbeaten with seven points from three games. Bayern have five.

Eze came off the bench to score

Saka had tangled with Alphonso Davies in an ordinary challenge, then went down while trying to play a pass with nobody near him and waved for help. Eberechi Eze replaced him, Noni Madueke moved across to the right, and Arsenal went ahead midway through the first half. Martin Ødegaard found Eze running into space on the left, and he finished low past Manuel Neuer. The flag went up, and Arsenal had to wait for VAR to confirm Eze had been onside.

Arsenal were ahead for about ten minutes. Kane picked the ball up around halfway and played a low pass through the Arsenal back line for Davies, who finished on 35 minutes.

Kane spent much of the night as a playmaker, but he also took the penalty that put Bayern in front on 61 minutes, after his shot hit Jurriën Timber’s outstretched arm. He waited a long time before shooting and sent David Raya the wrong way. That was Kane’s 16th goal against Arsenal, and he has now scored in ten Champions League games in a row, one short of Cristiano Ronaldo’s record.

Saves at both ends

Vincent Kompany had missed Tuesday’s press conference with a viral infection, but he was in the Bayern dugout. Neuer had been a doubt before the game, but he started, and with the score at 1-1 he clawed away a Bruno Guimarães header from a Rice corner. Raya matched him with a point-blank save from Dayot Upamecano’s header, and Neuer tipped a Timber shot over the bar late on.

Luis Díaz came off the bench midway through the second half and then had to go off again in the closing minutes with a muscle problem. Bayern were also without Michael Olise, who was suspended, and Jamal Musiala, who is injured.

Arteta’s worry

“It doesn’t look good at all but we have to wait and see,” Mikel Arteta said of Saka. “A player who has to come off with a really sharp pain is never good news.” He said Arsenal “prepared a team to win the game” and were not fully satisfied with a point, though he praised the way his side kept attacking after going behind.

The draw keeps intact a home record Bayern have held since December 2013: they have not lost a Champions League group or league-phase game in Munich since Manchester City won 3-2 there. Arsenal host Everton on Saturday, and Bayern go to Freiburg on Sunday.
