Ronaldinho said he was not signing to play, and at 46 he has just registered as a player

When Ronaldinho signed for Ravenna in June, the club was careful about the wording. He was a shareholder, a strategic investor, a global marketing ambassador. He was not a player. Honorary vice-president Ariedo Braida, asked whether the Brazilian might one day actually pull on the shirt, declined to rule it out, and that small gap between “not signed to play” and “not ruled out” is where the story has been sitting ever since.

It closed this week. Ronaldinho is registering as a player for a Serie C club at the age of 46, eleven years after his last competitive match.

What he actually said

The line everyone picked up was about a number. “If I could score my 300th goal, that would be even more beautiful,” Ronaldinho said at his presentation, having already offered the simpler version of why he is doing this: “I’m very happy to be here with friends, we have a team that can do something good.”

Club owner Ignazio Cipriani, who took over Ravenna in 2024, described the aim as “romantic, to try to score his last goal”, and pushed back on the idea that this is a marketing exercise. Given that his own club unveiled Ronaldinho at an event in Miami two months ago, he was always going to have to say that. It does not automatically make him wrong.

The 300 is his own count

Here is the part nobody has resolved. There is no agreed figure for how many goals Ronaldinho has scored. Depending on which competitions a database chooses to include, published career totals for him run from the mid-260s to well past 300. He scored 94 in 207 games for Barcelona, 72 in all competitions for Gremio, 33 in 97 caps for Brazil, and none at all in his short spell at Fluminense.

So the milestone is not a record anyone is keeping. It is Ronaldinho’s number, arrived at by Ronaldinho’s arithmetic, and he is the only person who knows exactly which goals he is counting. There is something quite charming about a 46-year-old signing for a third-division club to chase a target that exists mainly in his own head.

Ravenna are not doing this for a laugh

The club that has to build a team around this is a real one with real ambitions. Ravenna were founded in 1913, play at the Stadio Bruno Benelli, and have spent their history moving between divisions with a bankruptcy and a rebuild in the middle of it. They came third in Group B last season and missed out on promotion. They have not played in Serie B since 2008.

That is the tension worth watching. A promotion push and a 46-year-old legend on the teamsheet are not naturally the same project. Serie C is a physical, unforgiving league played on modest pitches in front of a few thousand people, and it is not built to accommodate a man who last played professionally in 2015.

Ravenna start their season away at Reggiana on Monday. Ronaldinho will not be involved. Cipriani has been clear that selection is the coach’s business, which is the correct answer and also a useful way of avoiding any promise about when the debut comes.

Why this one lands differently

Footballers come out of retirement all the time, usually for money, occasionally for a farewell. This is a slightly odd hybrid: a part-owner registering himself to play for the club he part-owns, two tiers below the Serie A he graced with Milan.

And yet. Ronaldinho won a World Cup in 2002, a Ballon d’Or in 2005 and a Champions League in 2006, and for about three years he was the most purely enjoyable footballer alive. A generation of Indian fans who found the game through those Barcelona teams have never really replaced him. If he gets twenty minutes at the Benelli and scrapes the ball into a corner from the edge of the box, the number attached to it will not matter to anyone.

Whether it happens is a different question. He is 46, he has not played a competitive match since September 2015, and the gap between an exhibition kickabout and a Serie C fixture is enormous. But the club has stopped hedging, and so has he.
