Premier League winners list: every champion since 1992-93, and who has won the most

The Premier League is the top division of English football. It broke away from the Football League in 1992, and 34 seasons on it has produced only seven different champions — a shorter list than most people expect from a league this large.

Manchester United have won it 13 times, more than anyone, and have not won it since 2012-13. Arsenal are the reigning champions: they took the 2025-26 title, their first in 22 years. Below is every champion since 1992-93, the count by club, how the last two seasons were decided, and what the numbers actually say.

Thirty-four seasons, seven winners. Read it top to bottom and the shape of the competition is obvious: Manchester United owned the first two decades, Manchester City the 2010s and early 2020s, and the last two seasons went elsewhere.

Who has won the most Premier League titles?

Manchester United, with 13. Every one of them came under Sir Alex Ferguson, and the last was his final season in charge.

The column adds to 34, which is every season played. Two clubs have won more than half of them between them — Manchester United’s 13 and Manchester City’s eight make 21 of 34.

The Premier League count and the all-time English count are different lists, and this is where readers most often get caught out. Liverpool and Manchester United are level on 20 English league titles each; Liverpool drew level by winning in 2024-25. Most of Liverpool’s came before the Premier League existed, which is why they sit fifth on the table above and joint-first on the all-time one.

How the last two titles were won

Both of the most recent championships broke a long run, and neither went to the final day.

Arsenal, 2025-26. The title was settled on Tuesday 19 May 2026, with a game still to play, and not by Arsenal. Manchester City needed to win at Bournemouth to take the race to the final day. Junior Kroupi put Bournemouth ahead in the 39th minute and Erling Haaland only equalised in the fifth minute of stoppage time — the 1-1 draw handed Arsenal the title. They finished on 85 points, seven clear. It is Arsenal’s fourth Premier League title and their 14th English championship, and their first since the unbeaten side of 2003-04. Eleven days later they lost the Champions League final to PSG on penalties in Budapest.

Liverpool, 2024-25. Arne Slot won it in his first season after replacing Jurgen Klopp, and won it early — a 5-1 defeat of Tottenham at Anfield on 27 April 2025 confirmed it with four matches to spare. Liverpool finished on 84 points and Mohamed Salah took the Golden Boot with 29 goals, his fourth. It was Liverpool’s 20th English title, which drew them level with Manchester United at the top of the all-time list.

Erling Haaland was the leading scorer in 2025-26 with 27 goals — a Manchester City Golden Boot in a season Manchester City did not win.

Who won the first Premier League?

Manchester United, in 1992-93, finishing 10 points clear of Aston Villa, who took 74 points from 42 games. It was United’s first English title since 1967 and the start of the run that produced the other 12.

Mark Hughes was United’s leading league scorer that season with 15 goals, supported by Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Brian McClair.

How the Premier League was formed, and what has changed since

The competition was founded in 1992 as the FA Premier League, when 22 First Division clubs resigned from the Football League to take control of their own broadcasting rights. The first season was made up of the 19 clubs that stayed up in the First Division plus three promoted from the Second Division. From 1993-94 promotion came from the newly created First Division — the second tier — which was renamed the Football League Championship before the 2004-05 season.

The league ran with 22 clubs until 1994-95, when four went down and only two came up. It has been a 20-club, 38-game competition ever since.

Fifty-one clubs have played in the Premier League. Forty-nine are English and two are Welsh — Cardiff City and Swansea City. The 51st was Luton Town, who debuted in 2023-24, and nobody has joined since: Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City all came up for 2026-27, and all three had been there before.

Premier League records worth knowing

Seven champions in 34 seasons. Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Leicester City and Liverpool — and that is the complete list. No club has won a maiden Premier League title since Liverpool in 2019-20.

Manchester City are the only club to have won four in a row. Check it against the winners table: 2020-21 through 2023-24 is the only run of four consecutive seasons by one club in the competition’s history. Manchester United managed three in a row twice, from 1998-99 and from 2006-07.

Arsenal’s 2003-04 side went the whole season unbeaten — 38 games, 26 wins and 12 draws — and remain the only team to do it in the Premier League.

Leicester City in 2015-16 is the one nobody predicted, and the odds are the reason it is still quoted. They were priced at 5000-1 by bookmakers before a ball was kicked, having finished 14th the season before after escaping relegation.

The promoted clubs had a brutal run of it, and 2025-26 was the season it eased. All three went straight back down in 2023-24 (Burnley, Sheffield United, Luton Town) and again in 2024-25 (Leicester City, Ipswich Town, Southampton). In 2025-26 only one of the three did: Burnley were relegated alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United, while Leeds United and Sunderland stayed up.

When does the 2026-27 Premier League season start?

The 2026-27 season begins on Friday 21 August 2026 and runs to 30 May 2027. It starts later than usual because of the 2026 World Cup, which pushed the opening weekend and the final matchweek back by a week.

Arsenal open the defence against Coventry City, who are back in the top flight for the first time since 2000-01 — a 25-year absence. Ipswich Town return after one season away and open against Sunderland, and Hull City, up through the play-off final against Middlesbrough, go to Manchester United.
