Cape Verde national football team: full squad and key players

Cape Verde’s national football team, known at home as the Blue Sharks, spent the summer of 2026 doing something no country of their size had managed. They reached a World Cup, drew all three group games, and walked into the knockout rounds with a squad assembled almost entirely from Europe’s second tier of leagues. This is the group of players who did it, the men who stood out, and where the team goes next.

Who are the Cape Verde national football team?

Cape Verde are an archipelago nation of roughly half a million people off the west coast of Africa, spread across 10 islands. Their football team is nicknamed the Blue Sharks (Tubarões Azuis) and is captained by winger Ryan Mendes. The squad leans heavily on the Cape Verdean diaspora in Portugal, the Netherlands, France and Ireland, which is how a country with a modest domestic league fields players from Benfica, Villarreal and Trabzonspor.

They qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in October 2025 and made their tournament debut in June 2026 in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Al Jazeera called them the second-smallest country ever to qualify, behind Iceland in 2018, when measured by population. By land area, at just over 4,000 square kilometres, they are smaller than Iceland but larger than Curaçao, who also made their World Cup debut in 2026 and are the smallest nation ever to qualify by both area and population.

Who are Cape Verde’s key players?

Vozinha (goalkeeper, Chaves). The vice-captain and, at 40, the emotional centre of the team. Spain had 27 shots against him in Atlanta on 15 June and scored from none of them, with seven saves in a goalless draw that is comfortably the best individual performance in the country’s football history. He became the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on his World Cup debut. He had 90 caps going into that match, having first played for Cape Verde in 2012, and he plays his club football in the Portuguese second division.

Ryan Mendes (forward, Iğdır FK). The captain, and the record holder on both counts that matter: 101 caps and 22 goals, more than anyone else has managed for Cape Verde. Born on 8 January 1990, he moved to Iğdır in September 2025 after earlier spells in France, England and elsewhere in Turkey. His penalty beat Mauritania in the last 16 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the first knockout win in Cape Verde’s history.

Mendes has been the subject of a New Zealand police investigation since March 2026, when a woman working with the Cape Verde delegation alleged he assaulted her at a hotel after a friendly against Chile. He has not been charged. Neither Mendes nor the Cape Verdean federation commented publicly when the story was reported during the World Cup, and he played in every match of the tournament.

Logan Costa (defender, Villarreal). The highest-profile name in the squad by club level. Born in Saint-Denis on 1 April 2001 to a Cape Verdean family, he came through Reims, established himself at Toulouse, and moved to La Liga in 2024. He played for France at under-16 and under-17 level before switching to Cape Verde in 2022, which is the story of this team compressed into one decision.

Kevin Pina (midfielder, Krasnodar). Scored Cape Verde’s first ever World Cup goal, a free kick from more than 30 yards against Uruguay that went through the wall and into the corner. Playing his club football in Russia keeps him well outside the European spotlight.

Dailon Livramento (forward, Casa Pia). Born in Rotterdam, and the man who scored the two goals that mattered most in qualifying: the 54th-minute winner against Cameroon in Praia, and one of the three against Eswatini that sealed the World Cup place.

Roberto “Pico” Lopes (defender, Shamrock Rovers). Born in Dublin and raised in Crumlin, the 34-year-old was the only Irish-born player at the 2026 World Cup. He qualifies through his father, who was born on São Nicolau, and he was tracked down by the Cape Verdean federation through a LinkedIn message he initially took for spam while he was working at a bank. He has played his entire international career while turning out in the League of Ireland.

Sidny Lopes Cabral (defender, Benfica). Born on 18 September 2002, the youngest serious contributor in a squad whose spine is closer to 35 than 25. He played in the win over Eswatini that clinched qualification, and scored the extra-time goal against Argentina that briefly made the holders sweat.

How did Cape Verde qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

They won CAF qualifying Group D on 23 points from 10 matches, four clear of Cameroon on 19, in a group that also contained Libya, Angola, Mauritius and Eswatini. Only the group winner went through automatically.

The result that turned the group was a 1-0 home win over Cameroon on 9 September 2025, Livramento scoring just before the hour at the Estádio Nacional in Praia against a country with a World Cup history stretching back to 1982. Qualification was confirmed there on 13 October 2025 with a 3-0 win over Eswatini, Livramento, Willy Semedo and Stopira scoring.

What did Cape Verde do at the 2026 World Cup?

Group H put them with Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia. They drew all three.

The opener against Spain in Atlanta on 15 June finished 0-0, Vozinha holding out through that 27-shot barrage. Against Uruguay in Miami on 21 June they took the lead through Pina’s free kick, went behind to goals from Maxi Araújo and Agustín Canobbio, and levelled again through Hélio Varela just after the hour for a 2-2 draw. A goalless draw with Saudi Arabia on 26 June, confirmed as second place once Spain beat Uruguay, sent them into the last 32 and made Cape Verde the smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup knockout round.

Argentina ended it in Miami on 3 July. Lionel Messi opened the scoring to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer on 20 goals, Cape Verde came back twice, Sidny Lopes Cabral’s strike in extra time among the goals of the tournament, and a Diney Borges own goal in the 111th minute settled a 3-2 win for the holders. Losing that way, to that team, reads closer to a compliment than a defeat.

Who is Cape Verde’s coach?

Bubista, a former Cape Verde centre-back born on 6 January 1970, was appointed head coach in January 2020 and led the team through qualification and the World Cup. He worked his way up through the Cape Verdean domestic game, coaching Mindelense, Académica do Mindelo, Sporting Praia and Batuque before taking the job.

His teams are built on a compact defensive block, a disciplined midfield and enough pace wide to punish opponents who overcommit. It is not a system that produces many goals. It is a system that turned fixtures against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia into three draws.

Cape Verde’s record at the Africa Cup of Nations

The World Cup run did not come from nowhere. Cape Verde reached the quarter-finals on their AFCON debut in 2013 and got there again in 2023, when Mendes’ penalty beat Mauritania in the last 16 for their first knockout win at the tournament. They then failed to qualify for the 2025 edition in Morocco, which made what followed a year later even harder to see coming.

What’s next for Cape Verde?

Qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania from 19 June to 17 July 2027, starts on 21 September 2026. Cape Verde were drawn in Group K alongside Mali, Rwanda and Liberia, with the first two matchdays running to 6 October 2026, the next pair in November and the last in March 2027.

That campaign is the real test of whether the World Cup was a peak or a floor. The ages point to a transition: Vozinha turned 40 during the qualifying cycle, Stopira and Mendes are into their mid-30s, and the players lined up behind them, Sidny Lopes Cabral and Telmo Arcanjo among them, have not yet had to carry a qualifying campaign on their own.

For anyone trying to place Cape Verde on the ladder, the honest read is that they are a well-drilled, defensively organised side who beat very few people and lose to very few people. Three draws at a World Cup is precisely the team they are, and for an island group this size, that is an extraordinary place to have arrived.
