Barcelona are selling the World Cup final’s matchwinner, and the accounting explains why
PSG have agreed around €50 million for Ferran Torres and he has agreed a five-year deal. Barcelona offered him a new contract instead. He asked to go, and the sale still books them a profit.

Twenty-six days after Ferran Torres scored the goal that made Spain world champions, in the 106th minute of a 1-0 win over ten-man Argentina, Barcelona agreed to sell him. Paris Saint-Germain will pay somewhere around €50 million, Torres has agreed a five-year contract, and he is due in Paris for a medical before anything is signed. Barcelona did not want this. They agreed to it anyway.
What they are letting go
Torres scored 16 league goals last season, which was as many as anyone else in La Liga managed. He shared the scoring award with Lamine Yamal, who finished with 24 across all competitions to Torres’s 21. He is 26. He started his Barcelona career as a winger and finished it as the centre-forward.
That last part is the problem. Robert Lewandowski’s contract ran out in June and he left for Chicago Fire on a free, signing a two-year deal in MLS after deciding he did not want another European club. Sell Torres and Barcelona have no established senior striker at all, four weeks after winning the World Cup with one.
Why they are doing it anyway
His contract runs out in June 2027. Barcelona were willing to extend it and reportedly told him so. Torres asked to leave, and a club with one year of leverage left on a 26-year-old who has just scored in a World Cup final is a club that either sells now or watches the price fall every month.
The accounting helps. Barcelona bought Torres from Manchester City for €55 million in January 2022 and spread that cost across a five-year deal, so most of it has already been written off the books. Selling for roughly the same number this late in the contract books a large profit rather than a loss, reported at around €39 million, plus the wages coming off the squad cost. For a club that has spent four years rearranging its finances to register players, that is not a small consideration.
Luis Enrique gets him back
Torres played for Luis Enrique with Spain before the manager left for Paris. He will now play for him again at a club that beat Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg on 12 August to keep the UEFA Super Cup, and that has spent the summer adding to a squad which did not obviously need it.
PSG opened at €40 million and Barcelona said no. The agreed number is close to €50 million, with reports of add-ons taking the total nearer €55 million. It is a verbal agreement between the two boards rather than a signed contract, so the medical is the last thing standing between this and an announcement.
He arrived in Barcelona the same way he is leaving
The neat detail is that Torres came to Camp Nou in January 2022 because Pep Guardiola had stopped picking him. City took €55 million for a 21-year-old who could not get a game. Four and a half years later Barcelona are taking about the same for a 26-year-old who scored the winner in a World Cup final, and both clubs will tell you they did well out of it.
Barcelona have a little time to work out the replacement. Ten of their players reached the World Cup semi-finals, so La Liga let them start late: the opening-weekend fixture against Athletic Club has been pushed to 27 August, and their first competitive league match is at Elche on 23 August. That is nine days to find a centre-forward, or nine days to decide that the ones already at the club will have to do.
