Lockie Ferguson’s last ODI was the 2023 World Cup semi-final against India, and New Zealand have brought him back for the series

New Zealand have named two squads for their five ODIs against India, with Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert held back for the last two games at Bay Oval.

Lockie Ferguson’s last ODI was the 2023 World Cup semi-final against India, and New Zealand have brought him back for the series

New Zealand will use two different ODI squads against India next month. The first three games go to a group built around the Test regulars. Most of them then head to Wellington to get ready for the Basin Reserve, and seven fresh players arrive for the last two matches at Bay Oval.

Mitchell Santner captains both groups. The names that stand out are in the second one: Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert, none of whom has played a one-day international for at least 18 months.

Ferguson and Allen, back after three years

Ferguson’s last ODI was the 2023 World Cup semi-final against India at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. India won it by 70 runs. Allen’s most recent ODI came against Bangladesh in September 2023, and he missed out on that World Cup squad altogether. Seifert last played the format in the home series against Pakistan in 2025.

All three are already in the squad for the five T20Is against India that start on 22 October. Head coach Rob Walter called the seven players coming in for games four and five “exciting and explosive players in their own right” and “proven match winners”.

The other four are less familiar: Kristian Clarke, Matt Fisher, Mitch Hay and Nick Kelly. Hay and Seifert are the two wicketkeepers in that group. So India will face a very different New Zealand side at Bay Oval from the one they meet at Eden Park.

Ravindra and Chapman fit again

Rachin Ravindra is in the squad for the first three games. He dislocated his right shoulder at a promotional shoot in Auckland in September and is missing the T20Is. Mark Chapman, ruled out of the T20Is with a torn hamstring, is picked in both groups.

Three fast bowlers were not available. Zak Foulkes has a hip flexor problem, Ben Sears is recovering from an ankle injury and Will O’Rourke, who has hamstring and calf injuries, will miss the whole India tour.

Why New Zealand have split it

The Test players in the first group, including Devon Conway, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson, leave after the third ODI in Hamilton on 10 November. The first Test starts at the Basin Reserve on 19 November. Walter stays with the one-day group for the final two games.

He also tied the plan to the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. “Bringing in seven players for the final ODIs allows us to test our depth,” he said, noting the tournament is “just one year away”.

The coaching staff is changing too. Luke Ronchi leaves after the India tour to become head coach of the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League, and BJ Watling, named this week as his successor as batting coach, joins the Test group in Wellington.

Where the ODIs are played

The series opens at Eden Park in Auckland on 4 November, moves to Wellington on 7 November and to Seddon Park in Hamilton on 10 November. The last two matches are at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on 13 and 15 November.

Games 1-3: Mitchell Santner (captain), Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wicketkeeper), Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Will Young.

Games 4-5: Mitchell Santner (captain), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Kristian Clarke, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Fisher, Mitch Hay (wicketkeeper), Nick Kelly, Tim Seifert (wicketkeeper), Blair Tickner, Will Young.
