Litton Das made a hundred and has eight dismissals, and Bangladesh need seven wickets on the last day in Abu Dhabi

Litton Das came out on Monday morning in Abu Dhabi on 5 not out, with Bangladesh 223 for 6 and already 329 ahead. He was out for 102 off 117 balls a little after lunch, and Bangladesh declared on 372 for 7, setting Afghanistan 479 to win the one-off Test.

Litton then went back behind the stumps and held the catches for all three Afghanistan wickets before the close. That makes eight dismissals in the match for him, to go with 53 in the first innings and his hundred in the second. Afghanistan finished the fourth day on 132 for 3. They need another 347, and Bangladesh need seven wickets on Tuesday.

A hundred in a session and a bit

Litton and Mehidy Hasan Miraz added 149 for the seventh wicket. That was quick work in a match where no innings has gone at four an over. Litton reached his fifty off 61 balls and went from there to his hundred off another 54, hitting 14 fours and no sixes.

Mehidy was the steadier of the two. He made 52 not out from 97 balls, and his fifty came off his 92nd. The pair took Bangladesh from 223 for 6 overnight to 337 for 6 at lunch without being parted. Mohammad Saleem finally had Litton caught behind by Ikram Alikhil, and that was the declaration.

Two early, then Rahmat and Atal

Afghanistan were 3 for 1 in the second over. Abdul Malik, who made 62 in the first innings, edged Ebadot Hossain to Litton for 2. Hasan Mahmud, who took Bangladesh’s first Test hat-trick by a fast bowler on Sunday, then had Shahidullah caught behind for 19, and the score was 28 for 2.

Rahmat Shah, unbeaten on 105 in the first innings, dug in again with Sediqullah Atal. The two added 82 in 35-odd overs, and Rahmat reached a second fifty of the match off 121 balls. Three balls after that he edged Ebadot behind for 51. That was the only wicket Bangladesh took in the final session.

Atal has been there since the second over and is 35 not out from 126 balls. Hashmatullah Shahidi, out second ball for 0 in the first innings, is 19 not out. He needed the physio for a calf problem late in the day, but batted on to the close.

What the last day looks like

Nobody expects Afghanistan to score 347 more, and Bangladesh’s spinners have bowled tightly. Taijul Islam has 15 overs for 24 runs, though without a wicket. Seven wickets in a day is a fair ask on a fifth-day pitch, and I would make Bangladesh favourites. But Atal and Rahmat batted for most of Monday afternoon without much alarm, and if Afghanistan’s middle order can do the same on Tuesday, a draw is not out of the question.
