India name ODI squad for England as Kohli awaits a fitness verdict

India have named a 15-man squad for the one-day international leg of their tour of England, and the headline questions both sit in the top order. Shubman Gill will captain the side, Shreyas Iyer is his deputy, and Virat Kohli is back in the picture, though his place comes with a caveat that should be settled within hours.

Kohli has been picked subject to fitness. He hurt his hamstring during the IPL 2026 final and the injury kept him out of the recent ODIs against Afghanistan. A final call on whether he travels rests on a fitness test at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on June 22, so the squad as announced may yet read slightly differently once the medical staff sign off.

Bumrah returns, Jadeja misses out

The clearest selection statement is the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who comes back into the one-day setup in place of Prince Yadav. India will manage his workload carefully across a long English summer, but having their first-choice quick available for a 50-over series against England is a boost worth more than any squad-depth experiment.

Bumrah leads a pace group that also includes Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana and Gurnoor Brar, with Nitish Kumar Reddy offering a seam-bowling all-round option. Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar make up the spin and all-round stocks. Two omissions stand out alongside that recall. Ravindra Jadeja again misses the one-day plans, a call the selectors have never fully explained, and Yashasvi Jaiswal drops out despite scoring a hundred in the recent Afghanistan series.

A familiar core under a new captain

For all the talk of transition, the batting still leans on experience. Rohit Sharma and Kohli remain central to the order, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan provide the wicketkeeping options, and Gill steps up as the long-term leader the selectors clearly want to build around. Iyer’s promotion to vice-captain points the same way.

The full squad: Shubman Gill (captain), Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar. The three ODIs are in Birmingham on July 14, Cardiff on July 16 and at Lord’s on July 19.

Everything now hangs on the Kohli verdict. Pass the test and India go to England with their senior batting spine intact. Fail it, and a tour that was supposed to be about handing Gill the keys suddenly has a very different opening storyline.
