Hetmyer’s 40-ball hundred equalled the CPL record, and Trinbago still nearly chased it down

Shimron Hetmyer reached three figures off 40 balls at the Queen’s Park Oval on Monday night, which is as fast as anyone has ever done it in the Caribbean Premier League. He finished on 111 not out from 43. Guyana Amazon Warriors still needed every one of those runs.
The Warriors won by nine runs on DLS. For Trinbago Knight Riders it was a second rain-decided defeat at their own ground inside three days.
Forty balls, and a share of the record
Hetmyer hit eight fours and nine sixes. The hundred off 40 puts him level with Andre Russell and Tim Seifert at the top of the CPL list, and it came in an innings cut to 16 overs a side by the weather, so he had less time than a batter usually gets to build one.
Romario Shepherd’s 27 off seven at the back end pushed Guyana to 185 for 5. Rain then set Trinbago 182 from their 16.
Trinbago got close enough to hurt
Alex Hales made 55 from 24 balls with seven sixes in it. Nicholas Pooran hit 43 off 16. Between them that is 98 runs from 40 deliveries, and for a stretch it looked as though 182 was going to be nowhere near enough.
Mohammad Nabi stopped it. His three for 20 from three overs took the innings apart in the middle, and Dwaine Pretorius and Shamar Joseph took one each as Trinbago finished on 172 for 7. Nine runs short, with three wickets in hand and no one left who could clear the rope.
A wet week at the Oval
The ball had to be changed during the chase because it was too wet to grip, which is a real problem for a side built around spin. Trinbago’s bowling attack leans on it more than anyone else’s in this competition. Sunil Narine and Akeal Hosein turning a bar of soap is not the contest they signed up for.
On Saturday, at the same ground, Trinbago made 180 for 6 and lost to Jamaica Kingsmen by seven on DLS. Two competitive totals, two interruptions, nothing from either. The defending champions have now had the weather take a match off them twice in three days, and there is not a great deal a captain can do about that.
