Gujarat were 189 for 5 when Urvil Patel walked in, and he was 210 not out when they declared

Gujarat had lost three wickets for nine runs when Urvil Patel walked out at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday. When they declared on Tuesday, he was still there, 210 not out from 227 balls, and Gujarat had 534 for 9 against Kerala.

It is his first double hundred in first-class cricket. Kerala closed day two on 74 for 3, still 460 behind, with Sachin Baby on 14 and captain Vishnu Vinod on 21.

Half the side gone, then 179 for the sixth wicket

The openers had done the hard part. Aarya Desai made 95 off 132 balls and Abhishek Desai ground out 42 from 144, and they put on 116 before the first wicket fell. Then the innings came apart. Gujarat went from 180 for 2 to 189 for 5, with Manan Hingrajia, Aarya Desai and Jaymeet Patel all gone inside six overs.

Urvil and Vishal Jayswal took it from there. They added 179 for the sixth wicket and were both unbeaten at stumps on the first day, Gujarat 300 for 5 with Urvil on 63 and Jayswal on 50. Jayswal was run out for 77 on the second morning, and captain Chintan Gaja followed for 1 soon after, but Urvil kept going.

The last stretch was the strangest part of the innings. Siddharth Desai faced 94 balls for his 18, and the pair put on 82 for the ninth wicket. Urvil had 17 fours and six sixes by the time Desai was caught behind and Gaja called them in after 144.2 overs.

Kerala’s bowlers had a long two days. Nedumankuzhy Basil took 3 for 80, Aditya Sarwate’s two wickets cost 146, and Jalaj Saxena bowled 40 overs for one wicket. Arzan Nagwaswalla then took two of the three Kerala wickets that fell before the close.

The fast scorer bats long

Urvil’s name usually comes up for how quickly he scores. In November 2024, days after he went unsold at the IPL mega auction, he hit a 28-ball hundred against Tripura in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the fastest T20 century by an Indian. Chennai Super Kings signed him as an injury replacement for Vansh Bedi in 2025, and on 10 May 2026 he hit a 13-ball fifty against Lucknow Super Giants at Chepauk, level with Yashasvi Jaiswal’s IPL record.

This was a different innings. He batted 227 balls at a strike rate a little over 92, and he started it with half the side gone. IPL franchises have until 15 November to name their retentions for 2027. CSK already know what Urvil does with his first dozen balls. Now they have seen him bat for most of two days.

Three double hundreds in a day

He was not the only one. On the same day Sanvir Singh made 205, as Punjab declared on 592 for 9 against Andhra in New Chandigarh, and Pradosh Ranjan Paul made 208 in Tamil Nadu’s 571 for 7 declared against Chandigarh. Day three of the fourth round starts on Wednesday morning.
