Aliss Al Islam took a hat-trick on his BPL debut in 2019, and Bangladesh have now given him an ODI call-up
Litton Das returns to lead a 16-man Bangladesh squad for the UAE tri-series with Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, and the off-spinner is the one new name in it.

Aliss Al Islam took a hat-trick on his first day as a professional T20 cricketer, playing for Dhaka Dynamites against Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League in January 2019. Nearly eight years later he has his first ODI call-up. The off-spinner is in Bangladesh’s 16-man squad for the tri-series in the UAE with Afghanistan and Zimbabwe, which the board announced on Saturday, 10 October.
He is the one new name. Most of the other changes are about getting senior players back.
Litton back in charge
Litton Das captains the side, with Towhid Hridoy as his vice-captain. Litton missed the ODI series in Zimbabwe in July with a calf injury. He was named ODI captain earlier this year, taking over from Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who stays in the squad and can concentrate on his all-round game.
Mustafizur Rahman is back after getting injured in the opening match of that Zimbabwe series, and Hasan Mahmud returns to the one-day side after nearly a year away. Nahid Rana is the big absence. The fast bowler is still working his way back from the side strain he picked up in Zimbabwe in July. Mohammad Saifuddin and Parvez Hossain Emon also miss out.
Why Aliss, and why now
Aliss is not a complete unknown at international level. He made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in the bronze-medal match at the Asian Games in Japan, and took 1 for 18 in his four overs, though Sri Lanka won by 63 runs. The selectors clearly liked enough of what they saw to give him a run in the longer white-ball format.
He will be competing with Mehidy, Rishad Hossain and Tanvir Islam for the spin overs, so a debut is not guaranteed. I would still expect him to get a game. Bangladesh play two round-robin matches, and on slow UAE pitches in October I can’t see them leaving a new off-spinner on the bench for both.
The schedule
All three teams play each other once before the final. Bangladesh open against Zimbabwe at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on 17 October. Afghanistan play Zimbabwe on 19 October, Bangladesh meet Afghanistan on 21 October, and the final is on 23 October.
The full squad is Litton Das (captain), Towhid Hridoy (vice-captain), Tanzid Hasan, Saif Hassan, Soumya Sarkar, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Nurul Hasan Sohan, Rishad Hossain, Tanvir Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Hasan Mahmud, Shoriful Islam and Aliss Al Islam.
