Pioneers: the most influential cricket teams in history

Cricket has a known history going back to late 16th-century England, and in the international game different teams have taken turns at the top. Some won trophies; the best of them also changed how everyone else played. These are four men’s teams that shaped the sport, with the record each one built, and a table of every senior ICC title so you can see how the eras compare.

West Indies (1975 to the early 1990s)

Any conversation about dominance in cricket starts with West Indies. Under Clive Lloyd they won the first two World Cups, in 1975 and 1979, and by the end of the 1970s they were recognised as the unofficial world champions, a reputation they kept through the 1980s.

The Test record shows why. Between January 1980 and December 1994 West Indies played 117 Tests, won 59 and lost only 16. The attack was built on fast bowling, with Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Michael Holding among the quicks who made every batting line-up uneasy, and Viv Richards gave the batting the same edge. West Indies have added three ICC titles since: the 2004 Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cups of 2012 and 2016, both won under Daren Sammy.

Pakistan (1990s)

Pakistan’s defining moment came in 1992, when Imran Khan’s side beat England by 22 runs in the World Cup final in Melbourne. They reached the final again in 1999, losing to Australia. Through the decade their fast bowling, led by Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis, made them the most dangerous and least predictable side in the world on their day.

The success did not stop with the 1990s. Pakistan won the 2009 T20 World Cup, beating Sri Lanka in the final, and the 2017 Champions Trophy, where they beat India by 180 runs in the final at The Oval.

Australia (1999 to 2008)

Around the turn of the century Australia set a standard nobody has matched since. They won three World Cups in a row, in 1999, 2003 and 2007, and between May 1999 and March 2011 they went 35 World Cup matches without defeat. In Test cricket they twice won 16 matches in a row, the first run starting in October 1999 and the second in December 2005.

Ricky Ponting was the batting standout of the era, with Glenn McGrath, Shane Warne and Matthew Hayden around him. The trophies kept coming after that side broke up, too: Australia have won the World Cup again in 2015 and 2023, the T20 World Cup in 2021 and the World Test Championship in 2023, and with ten senior ICC titles they are the most successful men’s team in the table below.

India (2016 to the present)

No country follows cricket like India, and the national team has turned that depth of talent into the most consistent record of the current era. India won the T20 World Cup in 2024, beating South Africa in the final, then the Champions Trophy in 2025, beating New Zealand by four wickets, and retained the T20 World Cup at home in 2026, beating New Zealand in the final with 255 for 5 against 159. That third title made India the first men’s side to win the T20 World Cup three times.

There were near misses on the way: India lost the first two World Test Championship finals, to New Zealand in 2021 and Australia in 2023, and the 2023 World Cup final to Australia. With players such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah, this generation has won three white-ball ICC titles in three years.

Champions Trophy includes the KnockOut Trophy of 1998 and 2000. * The 2002 final was washed out and the trophy was shared by India and Sri Lanka.

Who is next?

The newest names on the list show the top is not closed. New Zealand won the first World Test Championship in 2021, beating India by eight wickets in the final, and South Africa won the 2025 final against Australia at Lord’s by five wickets, their first ICC title since the 1998 KnockOut Trophy. England, meanwhile, have the 2019 World Cup and two T20 World Cups. Cricket keeps finding new teams to set the standard.
