Most wins in the Asia Cup: India 49, Sri Lanka 47 in 165 matches

India have won 49 of their 72 Asia Cup matches, more than any other side. Sri Lanka have played exactly as many and won 47. That two-win gap is the whole of India’s lead, and it has only existed since the tournament started being played as a Twenty20 competition — in the 50-over half of the record, Sri Lanka are still ahead.

Most wins in the Asia Cup: every team, 1984 to 2025

The figures below combine both formats: the ODI Asia Cup from 1984 to 2023, and the Twenty20 Asia Cup from 2016 to 2025. The win percentage counts wins as a share of the matches that produced a result, so tied games and no-results are taken out of the denominator rather than counted as defeats.

The check: 161 wins, 161 defeats

A table like this is easy to get wrong by a match, and the error is invisible unless something has to add up. Two things do.

Every Asia Cup match that produced a result gave one team a win and one team a defeat, so the two columns have to match. They do: 161 wins and 161 defeats. And because every match appears twice in the table, once for each side, the matches column has to come to twice the number of games played. It totals 330, which is 165 Asia Cup matches across the 17 editions.

India’s lead is entirely a Twenty20 story

Split the same record by format and the top of the table changes hands.

Across four decades of the 50-over tournament, Sri Lanka have won more Asia Cup matches than India, 38 to 35. India have made all of that back and more in nine years of the Twenty20 version, where they have won 14 of 17 and lost twice.

Bangladesh are the other side the format split flatters. Nine wins in 48 ODI matches is a win rate under one in five; six in 13 in the T20 tournament is close to half. Afghanistan’s two halves are almost identical in size, 11 matches each, and they have won more of the shorter ones.

India and Sri Lanka have played the same number of games

Seventy-two each, and Sri Lanka got there in one tournament more: they are the only side to have entered all 17 editions, while India missed the 1986 edition in Sri Lanka.

Pakistan sit five matches behind on 67, having missed the 1990-91 edition in India. Bangladesh, who have played 16 editions since replacing India in 1986, are on 61 and have the most defeats of anyone, 46.

Four matches in 165 did not produce a winner on the day

Two Asia Cup matches have been tied and two have ended without a result, and all four involve the sides at the top of the table.

India are in three of them. Their 2018 meeting with Afghanistan in Dubai finished level, and so did their 2025 meeting with Sri Lanka, which India then won in a Super Over — it is recorded as a tie, which is why India’s 49 wins and 19 defeats do not add up to their 72 matches. The two no-results were both against Pakistan.

That is the sort of detail that makes two published versions of the same record. The five teams outside the big four

Afghanistan have the best record of the newer entrants by some distance: eight wins in 22 matches since 2014, including five in the Twenty20 tournament. The United Arab Emirates have four wins in 14, Oman one in six, and Nepal lost both of their matches on debut in 2023.

Hong Kong are the outlier at the bottom. Fourteen Asia Cup matches between 2004 and 2025, and no wins.
