Jasprit Bumrah’s 40 wickets are the most for India in T20 World Cup history, taken at 5.66 an over. The full list, and the four-wicket ceiling India have never broken.

Jasprit Bumrah has taken 40 wickets at men’s T20 World Cups, more than any other India bowler, and he took them at an economy rate of 5.66 across 96.2 overs. That is the most miserly figure of anyone in the tournament’s twelve leading wicket-takers — the next best is Anrich Nortje’s 5.71 — and it is the number that separates Bumrah from everyone else on this list.

He is fifth on the all-time list across all teams, behind Shakib Al Hasan’s 50, Adil Rashid and Adam Zampa on 44 each, and Rashid Khan on 43. Arshdeep Singh, on 36, is the second India bowler in the global top ten.

No India bowler has ever taken five in an innings

Ten editions, and the best any India bowler has managed at a T20 World Cup is four wickets in an innings. It has happened seven times, to seven different bowlers.

Arshdeep’s 4 for 9 against the United States at Nassau County in 2024 is the best of them. Bumrah’s 4 for 15 is the most recent, and it arrived in the 2026 final: New Zealand, chasing India’s 255 for 5, were bowled out for 159 and lost by 96 runs.

Four wickets is not a low ceiling by accident. A T20 bowler gets four overs, the strike rotates, and India have generally had the depth to spread the work — Bumrah’s 40 wickets came at 1.5 a match. The bowlers who take five in this format usually get one collapse and a full quota; India’s best have rarely had both on the same night.

What Bumrah’s economy rate actually means

An economy of 5.66 in a tournament where sides now regularly pass 200 is the outlier statistic on this page. Over 26 matches Bumrah conceded 546 runs in total — fewer than Arshdeep’s 625 from 22 matches, and fewer than Hardik Pandya’s 811.

His average of 13.65 is the best of any India bowler with 20 or more T20 World Cup wickets, ahead of Ashwin’s 17.25 and Arshdeep’s 17.36. He also bowled three maiden overs, which at this level is close to a curiosity: only Lockie Ferguson, Harbhajan Singh and Mohammad Amir, on four each, have bowled more at the tournament.

India’s 2026 attack, and how the list moved

India won the 2026 title with a nine-match campaign in which two bowlers took 14 wickets each and did it in completely different ways.

Bumrah took 14 at 12.42, conceding 6.21 an over. Varun Chakravarthy also took 14, at 20.50 and 9.25 an over — the wrist-spinner buying wickets at the price the modern game charges for them, including 3 for 7 against Namibia at Delhi. Axar Patel added 11, Arshdeep and Hardik nine apiece.

That tournament is what put Bumrah clear at the top. He went into 2026 behind Ashwin on the India list and came out of it eight wickets ahead, and Ashwin’s total is fixed: his last T20 World Cup was 2022.

The 2007 pair who started it

India’s first T20 World Cup was won by an attack nobody had seen before. Irfan Pathan finished with 3 for 16 in the final against Pakistan at the Wanderers and was named Player of the Match; RP Singh took 3 for 26 in the same game, and his 4 for 13 against South Africa at Durban four days earlier is still the fourth-best figures any India bowler has recorded at the tournament.

Neither played a T20 World Cup after 2012, and RP Singh’s nine matches produced 14 wickets at 13.28 — the lowest average in the table above, from the fewest overs in it.
