Rohit Sharma has played the most T20 World Cup matches with 47. The all-time appearance list, why nobody has featured at all ten editions, and who can still catch him.

Rohit Sharma has played the most matches in the men’s T20 World Cup: 47, across nine editions between 2007 and 2024. He did not play the 2026 tournament, and nobody has caught him yet.

The list underneath him has turned over almost completely since 2022. MS Dhoni, Chris Gayle and Mushfiqur Rahim were all in the top ten and are now sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth — not because their totals changed, but because eight other players went past them. That is what an expanded tournament does to an appearance record.

Nobody has played all ten T20 World Cups

There have been ten tournaments — 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2026 — and not one player has appeared at all of them. No cricketer who played the first edition in 2007 was still playing in 2026.

Nine is the maximum anyone has managed, and two men did it: Rohit Sharma and Shakib Al Hasan, both from 2007 to 2024, both missing only the last one. The longest careers at the tournament run to seventeen years, and there are six of them — Rohit, Shakib and Mahmudullah from 2007 to 2024, and Adil Rashid, Paul Stirling and Roelof van der Merwe from 2009 to 2026.

That is a useful check on any version of this page. If a list claims someone has played ten T20 World Cups, it has counted something else.

Appearances are about how far your team goes

The obvious reading of an appearance record is longevity. It is only half the story, and the numbers separate the two halves cleanly.

Adil Rashid has played three fewer tournaments than Rohit Sharma and is only nine matches behind him, because England kept reaching the back end of them. Shakib and Mahmudullah are the other extreme: nine and eight editions respectively, and the lowest rate in the group.

Shakib’s 43 matches break down as 5, 2, 2, 2, 7, 7, 6, 5 and 7. Those three consecutive twos are Bangladesh going out at the group stage in 2009, 2010 and 2012 — three whole tournaments that gave him six matches between them. Rohit’s nine editions read 4, 5, 3, 5, 6, 5, 5, 6 and 8, and the 8 is 2024 alone, when the field grew to 20 teams. Both sets add to the totals in the table above, which is how you know the edition counts are right.

Is Rohit’s record safe?

Less safe than it looks. Jos Buttler is on 43, four behind, and he played in 2026 — he is the leading appearance-maker among everyone who was at the last tournament. Adil Rashid is on 38 and also played in 2026. Glenn Maxwell, Quinton de Kock, David Miller and Mohammad Nabi were all there too, on 35, 35, 34 and 34.

One deep run at a 20-team tournament is worth eight or nine matches now, against the three, five and five matches Rohit got from the whole of 2010, 2012 and 2016. A player on 43 needs one more good tournament, not three more careers.

What the appearance-makers did with the matches

Longevity and output are not the same thing, and the top of this list contains both kinds of player.

Rohit Sharma’s 47 matches produced 1,220 runs, second on the all-time T20 World Cup run list behind Virat Kohli, who made 1,292 from twelve fewer games. Shakib’s 43 gave him 853 runs and 50 wickets, the most anyone has taken at the tournament, which makes him the only man in the top three for appearances who also leads a headline record. Adil Rashid’s 38 matches yielded 44 wickets and just 18 runs with the bat.

In the field, Quinton de Kock has taken the most catches with 32 in 35 matches, ahead of AB de Villiers on 30 from 30. David Warner has 25, Buttler 24, Maxwell 23 and Rohit 21. De Kock, Buttler and de Villiers all kept wicket at times, so their totals include catches taken behind the stumps; Warner, Maxwell and Rohit have no stumpings at the tournament and took theirs in the field.
