Gujarat, 2022-2023: a title in the first season
Gujarat made Hardik captain when they joined the league in 2022, and he led them to the title at the first attempt, beating Rajasthan by seven wickets in the final in Ahmedabad. They were the first side since Shane Warne’s Rajasthan in 2008 to win the trophy in their debut season.
In 2023 he took Gujarat to a second straight final, which they lost to MS Dhoni’s Chennai by five wickets (DLS method). Over the two seasons he captained 31 matches, won 22 and lost nine. Rashid Khan stood in once in each season.
Mumbai, 2024-2026
Hardik moved back to Mumbai ahead of the 2024 season and replaced Rohit Sharma as captain. The change was unpopular with many fans, and he was booed at several grounds early in the season. Mumbai won four of their 14 games and missed the playoffs.
2025 was much better. Suryakumar Yadav led in the opening game while Hardik served a one-match ban carried over from 2024 for slow over rates; Hardik captained the other 15 and won nine. Mumbai beat Gujarat by 20 runs in the Eliminator before losing Qualifier 2 to Punjab by five wickets in Ahmedabad.
In 2026 Mumbai won four of 14 and again missed the playoffs. Hardik played and captained 10 of those games, winning two.
His 70 matches as captain put him ninth on the league’s all-time list, one behind Rishabh Pant (71). MS Dhoni leads with 235.
