Eden Gardens in Kolkata is the oldest cricket ground in India and, at 68,000 seats, the second largest in the country and the third largest in the world. It has staged Test cricket since 1934, it houses the Cricket Association of Bengal, and it is home to Bengal and to the Kolkata Knight Riders. Eden Gardens pitch report: bat first or chase?
Almost every pitch report you will read gives Eden Gardens a single verdict. That is the problem, because the ground behaves differently in each format, and the numbers below are worked out from the result of every match played at the venue rather than repeated from a summary.

Read down that last pair of columns and the split is obvious. In ODIs the side batting first has won 21 of the 35 completed matches, which is 60 per cent, and setting a target has been the winning move at Eden Gardens for nearly forty years. In T20 internationals it is a coin toss at 10 chases to 9. In the IPL it inverts completely: the chasing side has won 60 to 45, which is 57 per cent the other way.
The reason is the competition rather than the pitch. The IPL is the only tournament that plays here night after night in April and May, when Kolkata is humid and the ball gets wet in the second innings. Dew is a bowling problem, not a batting one, and it lands almost entirely on the side defending a total. India’s internationals are spread across the calendar and do not sit inside that window in the same way.
Par has also moved. Across all 107 IPL matches the average first innings is 169, but across the 60 played since 2016 it is 181. If you are judging a total here, use the recent number. In ODIs the same recalculation gives 262 since 2016 against 252 all time, and in T20Is 166 against 164.
For Tests the striking figure is that 20 of the 43 have been drawn. Eden Gardens has historically been a slow, high scoring Test ground where the first innings averages 320, and the pitch takes turn late rather than early. That has changed in the last few years, and the November 2025 Test against South Africa finished inside three days with India bowled out for 93.

Laxman’s numbers here are barely believable: 1,217 runs at an average of 110.63, well clear of Rahul Dravid on 962 and Sachin Tendulkar on 872. Mohammad Azharuddin averaged 107.50 at the ground. Klusener’s 8/64 came on Test debut, and Javagal Srinath’s 8/86 against Pakistan in 1999 is the only other eight wicket haul here.

Rohit Sharma’s 264 is not just the Eden Gardens record. It is still the highest individual score in the history of one day international cricket, and the next best anywhere is Martin Guptill’s 237 not out for New Zealand in 2015. Kumble’s 6/12 in the 1993 Hero Cup semi-final against West Indies is the other innings this ground is known for, and it remains one of the cheapest six wicket hauls in ODI cricket.

Most of this table was rewritten in a single month. Eden Gardens hosted six matches at the 2026 T20 World Cup, including the first semi-final, and Finn Allen’s unbeaten 100 from 33 deliveries in that semi-final is the fastest century in T20 World Cup history, beating Chris Gayle’s 47 ball effort from 2016. He reached fifty in 19 balls and the hundred in another 14. Mustafizur Rahman’s 5/22 against New Zealand in 2016 was the standing bowling record here for a decade before Shepherd went past it.

The April 2024 match is the one worth knowing. Kolkata made 261/6 and lost, because Punjab knocked off 262 with eight wickets and eight balls to spare. That stood as the highest successful chase in IPL history until Punjab themselves chased 265 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in April 2026, so the Eden Gardens game is now second on that list. It also tells you everything the chase numbers above already said.
Sunil Narine’s 79 wickets here are almost double the next bowler’s, and he is the only player in the top four for both runs and wickets at the ground. RCB’s 49 all out in 2017 lasted 9.4 overs.
The matches Eden Gardens is remembered for
India v Australia, March 2001. India followed on 274 behind, Laxman made 281 and Dravid 180, and Harbhajan Singh took a hat-trick in the first innings and 13 wickets in the match. India won by 171 runs. It is one of only four occasions in Test history that a side has won after following on, alongside England at Sydney in 1894, England at Headingley in 1981 and New Zealand at Wellington in 2023.
