Manchester United sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a £50m deal
Andrey Santos has swapped Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford, giving Michael Carrick a 22-year-old Brazil midfielder to build his engine room around.

Manchester United have signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea, adding one of Brazilian football’s most promising midfielders to a squad Michael Carrick is steadily rebuilding. United will pay an initial 48 million pounds for the 22-year-old, a fee that can rise to 50 million with add-ons, and have tied him to a contract that runs until June 2031, with the option of a further year. Chelsea have kept a 10 percent sell-on clause, a sign they expect his value to climb.
Santos leaves Stamford Bridge having only just broken into Chelsea’s first team, which tells its own story about how highly United rate him. He made 27 Premier League appearances last season, won the Club World Cup with Chelsea in the summer of 2025, and did enough in a short window to convince a rival that he was worth serious money.
A long road back to the Premier League
For a player still only 22, Santos has already taken a winding route. Chelsea signed him from Vasco da Gama in January 2023, then sent him straight back to Brazil on loan. Spells at Nottingham Forest and then Strasbourg followed, and it was the French move that reshaped his career. Across his time in Ligue 1 he racked up goals from midfield, including nine goals in his final season there, the kind of output that is rare from a deep-lying runner.
He returned to Chelsea in 2025 and finally got his chance in west London, holding down a regular place through the second half of the campaign. Born in Rio de Janeiro, Santos made his senior Brazil debut as an 18-year-old and has captained the country at under-20 and under-23 level, a marker of the leadership Chelsea’s academy staff had long spoken about.
Filling a midfield that needed work
United’s interest hardened after they missed out on West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who chose Tottenham. Santos became the alternative, and in the end the deal moved quickly once Chelsea accepted the structure. He arrives as part of a wider midfield refresh under Carrick, who has been reshaping the centre of the pitch since taking the job on a permanent basis.
What Santos offers is legs and forward drive. He covers ground, arrives late in the box, and carries the ball through the lines rather than simply recycling it. Some observers have reached for a Bruno Guimaraes comparison, and while that is a heavy tag to hang on a 22-year-old, the profile fits: a Brazilian midfielder who can both protect a back line and hurt the opposition at the other end.
What comes next
He will not be handed a settled role on day one. United’s midfield still has established names ahead of him, and Carrick will want to bed him in rather than lean on him from the opening weekend. But the money spent and the length of the deal point to a long-term plan, not a stopgap. If the Strasbourg version of Santos travels to the Premier League, United may have found a midfielder they can build around for years.
