Fiorentina pay 26 million euros for Oulai, eleven months after Trabzonspor signed him

Trabzonspor signed Christ Inao Oulai from Bastia last August for about six million euros. Eleven months later they have sold him to Fiorentina for 26 million, and they have kept a slice of whatever he goes for next.

The add-ons are worth another four million, which takes the deal a shade past 30 million euros in total. Trabzonspor also hold ten per cent of the profit on any future sale. Oulai has signed a five-year contract in Florence.

One season, and the price quadrupled

Oulai turned 20 in April. He came through the JMG academy in Abidjan, spent a year at Bastia in the French second division, and moved to Turkey in August 2025 with no real reputation attached to him. He then played 25 Super Lig matches, more than 2,000 minutes, scoring twice and setting up four.

That is one good season, not a body of work, and 26 million euros is a lot to pay on the strength of it. Fiorentina are betting on the age as much as the output.

What he gives Fiorentina

He is a central midfielder who can play as the deeper of two, and his value is in what he does when the ball arrives with a defender on his shoulder. He receives under pressure and turns out of it instead of playing backwards, which is a specific and fairly rare habit in a 20-year-old.

Fiorentina have needed it. Their midfield has a tendency to stall when opponents squeeze the first pass out of defence, and buying someone who breaks that press by carrying rather than recycling addresses the problem directly. Whether he does it in Serie A at this age is the honest open question, because Italian football will read him more carefully than the Super Lig did.

The World Cup put a number on him

Oulai played all four of Ivory Coast’s matches at the World Cup, a little over 200 minutes across them. They beat Ecuador, lost to Germany, beat Curaçao and went out to Norway in the round of 32, Erling Haaland settling it late in Dallas. It was the first time Ivory Coast had got out of the group stage at a World Cup.

He now has 13 senior caps. A midfielder who holds up in that company at 20 is a different asset in July than he was in May, and the fee reflects the tournament as much as the season that came before it.

Good business, whoever is right

Trabzonspor have more than quadrupled their money inside a year on a player they found in Ligue 2, and they have protected themselves if Fiorentina sell him on at a profit. That is close to a perfect piece of recruitment regardless of what happens next.

For Fiorentina the maths are less settled. They have paid a fee that only makes sense if Oulai becomes a regular quickly, and 20-year-old midfielders arriving in Serie A do not always do that. The contract runs to 2031, so there is room for him to take a season to work it out.
