David’s hat-trick fires Canada to a historic first World Cup win, 6-0 over Qatar

Canada had waited their whole World Cup history for a moment like this, and when it arrived it came in a flood. The co-hosts thrashed Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver on June 18, with Jonathan David scoring a hat-trick to hand Canada their first win at a men’s World Cup and push them to the brink of the knockout rounds.

BC Place was rocking from the moment Cyle Larin put the hosts in front in the 16th minute, pouncing after the goalkeeper punched away David’s volley. David doubled the lead before the half-hour and then bundled in a third deep into first-half stoppage time, a scramble that started with a shot rattling back off the crossbar. By the interval the contest was already gone.

Qatar fall apart after two red cards

Qatar’s afternoon unravelled in the chaos. They were reduced to ten men late in the first half when Homam Ahmed was sent off, and the situation grew worse early in the second when Assim Madibo was dismissed for a heavy challenge on Ismael Kone. Kone was stretchered off with a serious lower-leg injury, a sour note on an otherwise jubilant day for the home crowd.

Down to nine, Qatar could not stem the tide. Nathan Saliba, on as Kone’s replacement, curled in a free kick in the 64th minute to make it four. Mohamed Manai then turned a Canadian effort into his own net in the 75th, and David completed his treble in stoppage time to round off the rout.

David joins elite company

The three goals lifted David into rare territory at this tournament. Only Lionel Messi, with his hat-trick against Algeria, had previously managed three in a single match at the 2026 finals. For a striker who carries Canada’s attacking hopes, it was the kind of statement performance the team has been waiting for on the biggest stage.

The margin carried historical weight too. Canada matched the record winning margin for a World Cup host nation, a six-goal victory that puts them alongside Italy in 1934, Brazil in 1950 and Argentina in 1978. In a single afternoon, Canada also tripled the total number of goals they had scored across their entire previous World Cup history.

Knockout qualification within reach

The win takes Canada to four points and top of their group on goal difference, ahead of Switzerland. One more result should be enough to send them through to the last 32, a remarkable position for a side that had never tasted victory at the tournament before this week. Qatar, meanwhile, are left to regroup with their hopes hanging by a thread after a day to forget in British Columbia.

For a host nation that arrived under pressure to justify its place, this was the release valve. Canada will fancy their chances of carrying the momentum deep into a home World Cup.
