Bernardo Silva joins Real Madrid on a free transfer to reunite with Mourinho

Bernardo Silva’s nine-year stay at Manchester City is over. The Portugal midfielder has joined Real Madrid on a free transfer, signing a two-year deal that runs until 2028 and linking back up with Jose Mourinho, who was appointed Real Madrid head coach earlier in June.

A free transfer with plenty of suitors

Silva ran his City contract all the way down, which let him leave for nothing despite years of consistent output. That turned him into one of the most chased names of the window. Barcelona spoke to his agent Jorge Mendes, Atletico Madrid were keen, and there was interest from Benfica, Saudi Arabia and MLS too.

Madrid won the race in the end, and the pull of Mourinho looks to have mattered. Both men are Portuguese, and the chance to work under the new head coach helped tilt the decision toward the Bernabeu.

What City lose

Silva leaves as one of City’s most decorated players. Across nine seasons he racked up more than 450 appearances and a heap of silverware, including six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2023. At 31 he is past his peak on paper, but his knack for playing centrally or on either flank made him a manager’s dream and a hard player to replace.

Mourinho’s Madrid takes shape

The signing offers an early look at Mourinho’s second spell in charge. He was handed a three-year deal until 2029, returning more than a decade on from his first stint between 2010 and 2013, and he formally starts work when preseason begins in July.

Silva is not the only fresh face. Madrid had already brought in Spain defender Marc Cucurella from Chelsea for around 60 million euros earlier in the week, so Mourinho will have new options in defence and midfield before the squad even reports back.

Business done during a World Cup

The deal also lands in the middle of the World Cup, with the summer window having opened on 15 June. Much of the early trading is being shaped by the tournament, and Madrid moving quickly for a free agent of Silva’s standing is the kind of statement a club makes when it wants its squad settled well before the new season.
