Mexico and South Korea meet in Guadalajara with top spot in Group A on the line

Group A has a leader-takes-all feel to it on Thursday night, and both teams walk in unbeaten. Mexico and South Korea each won their opening game, each sit on three points, and the winner in Guadalajara walks out top of the group with a foot already in the knockout rounds. For Indian viewers the match starts early on Friday morning, with kick-off at the Estadio Akron at around 6:30 AM IST.

It is the kind of fixture the hosts wanted at this stage. Mexico got the whole tournament under way with a 2-0 win over South Africa at the Estadio Azteca, Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez supplying the goals in front of a full house. Javier Aguirre’s side looked organised and dangerous on the break, and a second win would push them to six points and all but book a place in the last 32 with a group game still to spare.

South Korea arrive with momentum

South Korea will not be intimidated by the noise. They came from behind to beat Czechia 2-1 in their opener, the sort of result that tends to settle a side early in a tournament. Son Heung-min remains the player Mexico will plan around, still the focal point of everything good Korea produce, with Hwang In-beom pulling the strings in midfield. Get the balance right between containing Son and pressing Mexico’s full-backs, and Korea have the tools to win this.

The reward is the same for both. A win guarantees top spot in Group A and, in the expanded 48-team format where the top two from every group go through, a place in the round of 32. Even a draw would leave both sides in a strong position heading into the final round of group matches. The loser, by contrast, would be dragged back into a scrap, with Czechia and South Africa meeting earlier in the day knowing one of them needs points to stay alive.

What to watch

Home advantage is real here. Mexico have played a World Cup group stage on home soil before and know how to feed off the crowd, and Aguirre will want his team to start fast and quieten any Korean confidence early. Korea’s discipline and Son’s ability to punish one mistake make them awkward opponents, though, and if the game is still level after an hour the pressure starts to sit on the hosts rather than the visitors.

It is a genuine top-of-the-table clash this early in a World Cup, which does not happen often. Two teams, three points each, and a knockout place on the line in one of the loudest stadiums in the tournament.
