Brazil meet a fearless Japan in Houston with a World Cup last-16 place at stake
Brazil topped Group C with Vinícius Júnior in form, but Japan arrive in Houston unbeaten in the group stage and with a recent win over the Seleção to lean on.

Brazil open their World Cup knockout campaign against Japan at NRG Stadium in Houston on Monday, with the winner going through to the last 16. Kick-off is 10:30pm Indian time, the early afternoon in Texas.
The five-time champions arrive as Group C winners and in the kind of form that has them among the favourites. Brazil began with a 1-1 draw against Morocco, then put three past Haiti and three more past Scotland to finish top. Vinícius Júnior was at the heart of most of it, scoring four times in the group stage and giving Carlo Ancelotti’s side a cutting edge that few teams left in the tournament can match.
Japan arrive with no fear
Japan will not be turning up to make up the numbers. They came through Group F in second place without losing, twice fighting back to draw 2-2 with the Netherlands, hammering Tunisia 4-0 and then drawing 1-1 with Sweden. More telling still, they beat Brazil 3-2 in a friendly in October 2025, the first time in their history they had got the better of the Seleção, a result that showed exactly what this side can do on its day.
Their game is built on quick, clever movement and hard pressing, and they will fancy their chances of unsettling a Brazil defence that has not always looked watertight. If the Seleção drop their guard for a moment, Japan have the runners to make them pay.
What to expect
Brazil are still favourites, and on individual talent they should have enough. The sensible plan is to keep things solid at the back and let the forwards go to work, with Vinícius and the rest expected to see plenty of the ball against a Japan team that will happily give it to them and play on the break.
For Japan, the path is obvious. Stay compact, frustrate Brazil, and trust the counter-attack that already accounted for this same opponent once before. They travel to Houston believing a second upset is on, and a place in the last 16 would be among the bigger results of the knockout round so far.
