Ward-Prowse is going back to Southampton for under £1m, three years after leaving for £30m
West Ham have agreed to let James Ward-Prowse return to the club he joined at eight years old. Both sides are in the Championship now, and Southampton are bottom of it on minus one.

Three years ago West Ham paid Southampton around £30 million for James Ward-Prowse. Southampton have now agreed a deal to take him back for a fee reported at under £1 million, and the strangest part is that neither club is in the Premier League any more.
A £30m round trip that ends in the Championship
Ward-Prowse joined Southampton’s academy at eight and left at 28, having played 410 games and scored 55 goals for them. He captained the side. He is the reason a generation of Saints fans stood up whenever the ball was placed 25 yards out.
West Ham signed him in August 2023 and got 75 appearances out of him. Nuno Espirito Santo dropped him in September 2025, and he spent the second half of that season on loan at Burnley, where he managed one assist in 13 Premier League games and went down with them. A shorter loan at Nottingham Forest had come before that.
This season he has played 60 minutes of football. Forty-five of them came in West Ham’s opening league game, the other 15 against Portsmouth in the EFL Cup. On Tuesday, when West Ham played Southampton in the next round of that competition, he was not in the squad at all. Two days later the clubs had an agreement.
Southampton are bottom, and it is not because of the football
The club he is going back to started this season on minus four points. In May, Southampton admitted sending staff to film opponents’ training sessions, after an analyst was photographed pointing a phone at a Middlesbrough session two days before the two clubs met in a playoff semi-final. Ipswich Town and Oxford United had been watched the same way.
Southampton won the tie. The EFL then threw them out of the final, and dismissed their appeal on 20 May, three days before it was played. Middlesbrough took their place against Hull City at Wembley, lost to an Oli McBurnie goal five minutes into stoppage time, and it is Hull who are playing Premier League football this season. The four-point deduction was the part that carried over.
They have made a start of sorts under Tonda Eckert, beaten 2-1 at Watford and then winning 3-1 at home to Stoke City, which leaves them 24th on minus one. Nobody else in the division has a negative total.
The Beckham record goes on hold
Ward-Prowse has scored 17 direct free-kicks in the Premier League. David Beckham scored 18, and no other player in the competition’s history is close to either of them. Every one of Ward-Prowse’s 17 was for Southampton, and he has not added to the tally since he left.
He is 31 now. A move to a Championship club means the number stays where it is unless Southampton come back up while he is still taking their set pieces, which is a longer shot than it sounds when the team currently sits below everyone else in the table. Whether that bothers him is another matter. He was always more interested in the deliveries than the list.
What Southampton get is a 31-year-old with 60 minutes of football behind him this season, at a price that rounds down to nothing. What they also get is a former captain who knows the place better than anyone currently in the building. For a side on minus one with four days of the window left, that is a reasonable trade.
