Vinicius signs to 2032, and Arsenal’s pursuit ends without a bid ever being made

Real Madrid published the statement on Thursday and it did not take long to read. Vinicius Junior has extended his contract to 30 June 2032. Six more years. The saga that had Arsenal watching from a distance for the best part of a fortnight ended the way these things usually end once Madrid decide they want to keep somebody.

The 26-year-old had been heading into the final year of his previous deal, the one agreed in 2022 that ran to June 2027. That was the whole reason north London got interested. A Ballon d’Or runner-up who is eleven months from being able to leave for nothing does not come along often, and for a few weeks it genuinely looked like he might.

The money was the argument, and it had been for a year

Vinicius and the club had been stuck on wages since last summer. He wanted something in the region of 30 million euros a season. Madrid put 22 million on the table, a figure that would already have placed him among the highest earners at the Bernabeu, and he said no.

That rejection is what opened the door. In late July, David Ornstein and Mario Cortegana at The Athletic reported that Arsenal’s ownership had signed off on a deal and that the move appealed to Vinicius if he did not renew. His camp then publicly denied anything had been agreed with anybody. Nobody, at any stage, reported a bid.

Then Madrid improved the offer. Vinicius had come back to training at Valdebebas on Monday after a break that followed Brazil’s World Cup exit, and on Wednesday his agent Frederico Pena and adviser Tata Soares sat down with the club’s director general Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat. By Thursday it was announced. The financial terms were not disclosed, which is standard for Madrid and tells you nothing either way.

Arsenal never made an offer

This is the part worth holding on to. For all the noise since late July, Arsenal did not bid for Vinicius. They were on standby, watching the renewal talks, ready to move only if the negotiation collapsed for good. It never did, and Madrid have said all along they would only have let him go if it had.

Mikel Arteta was asked about it directly after the 4-1 win at Girona in a pre-season friendly on 1 August. He laughed and walked off. On the window more broadly he was less coy. “We expect to have movements in the next few weeks, obviously, because we want to get better,” he said. “And you can just see the transfer market and our opponents. What we are doing, we won’t sit still and we are very ambitious.”

Eight seasons, 375 games, 14 trophies

Vinicius joined Madrid from Flamengo in July 2018 as an 18-year-old. He has since played 375 matches, scored 128 goals and won 14 trophies: two Champions Leagues, three Club World Cups, three LaLiga titles, three Spanish Super Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and a Copa del Rey. He was FIFA’s The Best men’s player in 2024, the same year he finished second to Rodri in the Ballon d’Or.

His own reaction went up on Instagram and was rather less corporate than the club’s. “Eight years at the Bernabeu are too short,” he wrote. “Six more years, and then forever.”

Arsenal still need a left winger, and the window shuts on 1 September

The champions of England go back to looking. Left wing was the position Arsenal wanted a genuinely elite name in this summer, and Vinicius was that name. There is no obvious equivalent sitting available, which is the risk you take building a plan around a player who was never actually for sale.

They are not empty handed. Bruno Guimaraes has passed his medical and signed a four-year deal, with Newcastle taking the 75 million pounds in three instalments, and that gives Arteta the midfield upgrade he wanted most. But a side that ended a 22-year title wait in May, and spent a fortnight thinking it might add one of the best attackers in Europe, now has under four weeks to find another answer. Everyone with a winger to sell knows it.

None of which will trouble Madrid. They have kept the best attacker they have and paid a wage bill instead of watching him walk out for nothing next June. For a Thursday in August, that is a decent morning’s work.
