Villa sold Konsa for £51m and replaced him with a £30m centre-back from the Championship
Aston Villa confirmed Taylor Harwood-Bellis on deadline day, an initial £25m with £5m in add-ons. He scored seven goals from centre-back in the Championship last season, and Villa go into the international break 19th with no points and no goals.

Aston Villa signed Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton on Tuesday afternoon, an initial 25 million pounds with another five million in add-ons, with the window open until 11pm. Eleven days earlier they had sold Ezri Konsa to Arsenal for 51 million plus four. So the centre-back Villa spent seven seasons building the defence around has been swapped for one who spent last season in the Championship, and Villa are 26 million pounds better off on the fixed fees.
He scored seven from centre-back last season
Harwood-Bellis joined Manchester City’s academy at six, from Stockport, and never played a Premier League match for them. He made his debut in the League Cup in September 2019 and then went out on loan five times in four seasons: Blackburn, Anderlecht, Stoke, Burnley and finally Southampton.
Southampton made that last one permanent on 1 July 2024, when promotion triggered a 20 million pound obligation, and he signed a four-year contract. He played 34 Premier League games in the relegation season that followed. Last season he played 41 in the Championship and scored seven, which is a lot for a centre-back and enough to win him the Southern Daily Echo’s player of the year award.
His England career is one cap and one goal. He came off the bench against the Republic of Ireland at Wembley in November 2024 and scored the fifth in a 5-0 win. He has not been picked since.
Villa have sold more than they have bought, by a lot
The Harwood-Bellis fee looks small next to what has gone out of Villa Park this summer. Morgan Rogers went to Chelsea in July for 117 million, which made him the most expensive British footballer there has ever been. Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United when they triggered a 35 million release clause. Ollie Watkins went to Al Hilal for around 50 million after six years and 108 goals. Konsa’s 51 million came on top.
Coming the other way: Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea for a fee that can reach 65 million, a Villa record, Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris Saint-Germain for about 47 million, announced an hour or so earlier, and now Harwood-Bellis. Unai Emery has kept the shape of the team and replaced most of the names in it, and the club has banked a great deal of money doing it.
Two games, no goals, no points
The table is where this gets uncomfortable. Villa have played twice, lost twice, scored nothing and conceded five, and they sit 19th. Arsenal beat them 1-0 at Villa Park on Monday night, Bukayo Saka finishing a Riccardo Calafiori cutback just before the hour. Villa have not managed a shot on target all season.
Some of that is timing. Jackson has barely arrived, Mbaye and Harwood-Bellis have not played a minute, and the two league games were played by a defence without the man who had been in it since 2019. The international break gives Emery a fortnight with the whole squad in one place for the first time.
The question the fee raises is whether a 24-year-old with one England cap and two of the last three seasons in the second tier is the right answer to selling Konsa. The counter is that settled Premier League centre-backs do not tend to be available on the last day of a window at a price Villa were willing to pay. They find out either way from the middle of September.
