Two Reinaldo corners lift Mirassol out of the drop zone and push Grêmio into it
Both Mirassol goals in their 2-1 win over Remo came from Reinaldo corners. The result took them up to 14th and dropped Grêmio into the Brasileirão relegation zone on a night Grêmio did not play.

Mirassol beat Remo 2-1 at the Estádio José Campos Maia on Wednesday night, and both of their goals came from the same delivery by the same player. Reinaldo took two corners. One of them went in off a defender, the other found a head. That was enough to move Mirassol out of the Brasileirão relegation zone and, without Grêmio playing a minute of football, to push Grêmio into it.
It was not a night that will live long in the memory of the 4,519 people who watched it. Mirassol had 54 per cent of the ball and four shots on target. Remo managed two. What the game did have was consequences.
Two corners and an own goal
The opener arrived on the half-hour. Reinaldo swung a corner in, Remo defender Marllon got there first and glanced it backwards past his own goalkeeper, and Mirassol had a lead their play up to that point had not really earned.
They lost it in first-half stoppage time. Patrick had a shot blocked, the ball dropped to Leonel Picco on the edge of the box, and Picco hit it first time to level. Going in at 1-1 after conceding that late is the sort of thing that flattens a home crowd, and for a few minutes after the restart Remo looked the likelier side.
Then Reinaldo stood over another corner. João Victor met it, and Mirassol were 2-1 up nine minutes into the second half. Neither side scored again.
What it does to the bottom of the table
Mirassol go to 23 points and up to 14th, out of the bottom four for now. Santos and Internacional both sit on 22, in 15th and 16th.
Below them is where it gets uncomfortable. Grêmio are 17th on 22 points, which means they are in the bottom four, and they got there on a night they were not even playing. Internacional’s 1-1 draw with Flamengo and Mirassol’s win were enough between them. Grêmio do have a game in hand, which is the only thing stopping this from looking worse than it already does.
Remo stay on 21 points from 21 matches and remain in the relegation places. Their record now reads five wins, six draws and ten defeats, and losing to a direct rival is the sort of result that starts costing more than three points at this stage of a season.
A round split in half
Four fixtures from this round were postponed because of the Copa Sul-Americana playoffs, so the table is still moving and several teams around the bottom have games in hand on each other. Palmeiras took the headlines from Wednesday by winning 4-0 at Vitória to go eight points clear at the top, and Fluminense and Bahia drew 0-0.
None of that changes what Mirassol did. In a relegation fight, a set-piece routine that works twice in one night is worth more than possession statistics, and they now have a small amount of daylight where they had none.
