The Community Shield leaves England for a concert, and Arsenal meet City in Cardiff

English football’s curtain-raiser is not being played in England this year. Arsenal and Manchester City meet in the FA Community Shield at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday 16 August, the first time the match has left England since 2006. There is no stadium rebuild behind it and no problem with the pitch. Wembley is booked for a concert.

The Weeknd got there first

The Weeknd’s After Hours til Dawn tour has Wembley for the weekend the Shield would normally take, so the FA moved the football rather than the music. That sounds like a slight until you remember the Shield is a one-off friendly with a trophy attached, and a stadium the size of Wembley does not sit empty in August waiting for it.

The scheduling squeeze is not only about the concert. The 2026-27 Premier League season was pushed back a week, partly because of the extended 2026 World Cup, which left the Shield sitting on a date the calendar was always going to fight over.

Cardiff has done this before

The Principality is not a novelty host. As the Millennium Stadium it staged the Community Shield for six straight years from 2001 to 2006 while Wembley was being rebuilt, the last of them between Liverpool and Chelsea on 13 August 2006. Anyone who followed English football through the mid-2000s watched a lot of showpiece finals in Cardiff.

The venue holds just over 74,000, so roughly 16,000 fewer seats than Wembley. It also has a roof, which nobody in Cardiff in August will complain about.

Champions against cup winners

Arsenal are there as Premier League champions, having ended a 22-year wait for the title and taken their fourth. City qualify as FA Cup holders after beating Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley on 16 May, Antoine Semenyo settling it with a backheel, for City’s eighth FA Cup.

How seriously either side takes it is the usual August question. Managers treat the Shield as a fitness exercise with a medal ceremony, right up until they lose it. Arsenal winning the league for the first time since 2004 and City wanting the season to start differently gives this one a bit more edge than the fixture usually carries.

When to watch from India

Kick-off is 3pm BST on Sunday 16 August, which is 7:30pm IST. The Premier League itself does not begin until the following weekend, so this is the first competitive look at both squads after the summer window.
